No worries Clarence. It's all good. I blame that thread going sideways on extended LOP operations by some folks here. Just my opinion, not an expert, just PPL, no AP, and I occasionally do not use flaps either, no glass panel, round gauges rule, iPad user, paper is for old people, centrist republican, and if I have not offended someone yet I'll buy you a beer at SnF or Oshkosh [emoji3] Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

My old hangar was so small that I nailed down two pieces of 2x4 to the hangar floor where each of the mains should stop to prevent any part of the plane making contact with the hangar. My new hangar is large enough that I just eyeball it as there is plenty of room Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Holy crap, what the hell is going on here? Come on folks, let's put the nastiness behind us and get back to civil discourse. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Yes, it has happened a couple of times recently. I did not make the connection to the IOS update. I thought it was just my iPad acting up. Had to turn it off as you did. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Need some help on a few things
Hector replied to Raptor05121's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Alex, text me your email address and I'll send you the Mooney parts and maintenance manuals in the morning. The doghouse is just sheet metal parts. Any AP should be able to make repairs or even fabricate some parts. If everything is in terrible shape then it may make more sense to replace it all and I can look up someone who sells a complete doghouse kit (it's in my contacts somewhere). You need to seal every hole, gap, or tear in the doghouse or you will get terrible cooling and will start cooking cylinders in the summer. Around the starter and alternator we use a felt type material and I can looks that up in spruce catalog. In my C the instruments are not lighted. I have torpedo lights on the cabin overhead with red lens aimed at the panel. I converted those to red LEDs that are much brighter providing more than sufficient illumination at night (dimmer still works with the LEDs). Might need to get them working again first and I'll share the LED conversion if you want to try that. For the bulbs that are not working you may just need to remove them and read the P/N right of the bulb. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk -
Battery will not make a difference. Just don't move the prop. If you keep the plane in your own hangar should not be a big deal until you get it fixed. If in a communal hangar where other folks my inadvertently handle the plane then you my want to take other precautions Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Even if you don't see weather check for METARS on the iPad. If you are getting that then you are getting weather. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Night flying is beautiful indeed, specially if you live in heavily populated areas where the sea of lights can be just beautiful. Flying up/down the east cost of Florida is a good example of this specially when you can contrast the sea of lights with the darkness of the ocean. On clear winter nights from 12K you can almost see the outline of the entire state. That being said, I really don't go out of my way to fly at night. In fact, I often plan to avoid it if possible. I don't mind and it does not bother me that much, but it's another risk factor I like to mitigate by not indulging too much. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Avionics upgrade and if there is any money left (and the wife has not divorced me when she figures out how much I'm spending on my addiction), then strip/paint. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

News said the pilot got his license two years ago. Not sure how accurate that is. Maybe they meant rating? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Any words of wisdom for a new 1964 M20E owner?
Hector replied to MTNM20E's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
This is what I use and it works well for me. I buy the small notepads at Office Depot that fit perfectly on this and it works well. I too like to write down everything. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk -
Very nice. Did not know of this place. Definitely a place to visit next time I'm in London. May go again next year to watch the Jaguars play in Wimbledon. I know....crazy to go across the pond to watch the worst team in the US....but that's what fans do and we make it a vacation. I thought I had already discovered every aviation museum near London but have not seen this one. Now all I have to do is convince my mates who are not nearly as enthusiastic about aviation to make the size trip [emoji3] Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Can someone put a link to spruce or a part number for the nylon washers? My Hartzell prop is less than 5 years old and it does not have nylon washers on the spinner screws. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

I've always found the economics of a hangar interesting and somewhat bewildering considering what I see at my airport. I keep my lowly C in a $300 hangar, yet I see Cirrus and other very expensive singles that are only a few years old and worth many times what my C is worth parked on the ramp in their tie down spots. Why would you keep a $ .5M aircraft on the ramp?? I see them sit there day after day, rain or shine, and it doesn't compute. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

M20C (fixed) cowl flaps opening
Hector replied to Schinderhannes's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Hard to say. I adjusted them before I installed my JPI so I don't have before/after data. The single CHT gage original to the aircraft I'm afraid is not accurate at all. Presently, my 67C cruises with highest cylinder temperatures in the 360 range, BUT.......I will still go over 400 on takeoff for a short time until I get into a cruise climb setting. M20C (fixed) cowl flaps opening
Hector replied to Schinderhannes's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
My maintenance manual says: During the last Mooney summit a Mooney test pilot from that era stated the cowl design for the legacy aircraft was so bad that leaving the cowl flaps partially open resulted in both better cooling and an actual small increase in airspeed because it reduced airstream flow reversal inside the cowling (creates back pressure). I have a 67C and have adjusted the cowl flaps to around 1.5 inch in the closed position and a little over 2.5 inches or so in the fully open position Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk -
I would think once it is hard wired reliability of the connection should be pretty good. The USB port is failing due to repeated connections to charge? I've had my Stratus 2 since it came out and my only failure has been the battery a few months ago (Sporty's replaced the battery no charge) Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

CFD simulations of GoPro attached to wing
Hector replied to MV Aviation's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
Nicely done! I suspected as much but I had not seen a CFD simulation of a GoPro. Given the proliferation of these cameras in aviation it's nice to see someone taking a more scientific approach in determining the aerodynamic effects. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk -
Jose, I just don't have that much luck with reception above 6000. In Florida unless I'm over the east coast I'm not getting consistent cell phone reception. It's too unreliable for me to depend on it. I have a Stratus2 that works really well, and I also pay for XM (marine subscription at $10 per month) for my Garmin 496 as a backup. The XM radar is low resolution for a marine subscription but I still get METARS and such. For a backup it's good enough. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

The only times I'm not talking to ATC is during local burger runs and I'm reconsidering that too. Yesterday flew down from North Florida to Miami along the east coast roughly following V3. On more than one occasion ATC pointed traffic in opposite direction 500 feet above or below me. Although I always have eyeballs outside especially along a busy airway, it's comforting to know I have a second set of eyes looking out for me as well. The good news is that in all three cases I had actually spotted the traffic on the IPad/Foreflight even though I don't yet have ADS-b out. Looks like at least here in Florida we have enough aircraft with ADS-b out that I'm getting a more complete traffic picture. Nevertheless, I'm accelerating my ADS-b out installation because the benefits are just too good to pass up. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Dented Nose Gear Truss: Replace or Repair?
Hector replied to ThorFlight's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
I have the Lasar strut with the stops. The stops need to be checked occasionally to make sure they are set right but it will prevent costly dents and it's a load off my mind when I travel and the FBO moves my plane. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk -
Alex, I won these at the Mooney summit (door prize). The are LED bulbs that replace the stock nav and tail bulbs. They operate as regular nav lights or if you flip the switch twice they become strobes. I don't think they are exactly legal, not sure, but they look alright and definitely better than the stock bulbs. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
