I remember a topic a long while back about instructors in Mooneys. I wonder what our demographic in general is though. How many ATPs, Commercial, etc pilots our community holds? Did you prepare for or test for any of your ratings in a Mooney?

Instrument and CFI rating in helos

PPL + instrument in FW

I would one day like to get my CFI rating in my Mooney or even just a commercial rating but right now it doesn't make any financial sense to do it. One day though. And you can bet your arse it'll be in my Mooney.

Commercial, inst, multi-engine land.  All courtesy of competency agreement with the FAA through the USAF.  Cost me about 30 minutes at the Denver FSDO.  I could test for CFII but it involves a written I haven't yet taken (no apparent need).  Getting back into GA was seriously challenging.  I'm loving it though and it's made me a better military pilot.  And the M20E is far and away more complicated to fly than my work plane (stick-rudder, engine management).

Mike Your poll requires one to chose either the ATP or the Instructor as the highest rating held. So if one is both the poll requires one to chose which in their opionion is the highest. As you know an ATP is not necessarily an instructor.

I know, I know. Limitations of polling. I put ATP as higher cause you can get instructor with a few hundred hours but not ATP. Is it even possible to test for ATP in a Mooney?

I do not think it would make financial sense to learn how to fly in a Mooney (PPL). Even if you owned the Mooney. A 150 or 172 will be more forgiving to you mistakes.

We have long time Mooney owner @ KMRN w Glider, Inst, Comm, CFI, & ATP. I believe all except the glider earned in Mooney. SEL only! He's a dentist and the commercial, CFI and ATP were achieved for personal satisfaction. Most of his flying is Angel Flights in N1967F.

Ok Mike, the purpose of this poll? Please tell me we will get lower insurance rates due to association!

He was doing so well for awhile, but like any addiction, he's back at it.

Think he has an issue making independent decisions? ;)

CFI. Did complex, commercial, and CFI ride in the mooney. What a great airplane the Mooney is for those rides. Easy to show mastery with things like speed, gorgeous handling abilities, predictable speeds... So glad I did it in MY airplane than the rental Arrows that are so popular. My examiner thought he failed me when he told me to 'pick up the gear' after I did several ground maneuvers. I laughed at him and told him it had been up the whole time! Familiarity is great :)

I'm just going to say that my M20S made me the pilot I am today, and couldn't have picked a better platform for a solid foundation to move up to the turbine world...  I love my Mooney!
