mooneygirl Posted August 7, 2013 Report Posted August 7, 2013 As many of you can see, Mitch and I hired Jim Koepnick to shoot our Mooney Ovation at OSH. I just wanted to say this was a wonderful experience from start to finish. Bruce Moore was the pilot [he works for EAA and does freelance] and the photo plane was Patty Wagstaff's V-tail bonanza. If you ever have the idea to do air-to-air photo/video I would suggest and highly recommend Jim Koepnick. He is an award winning aviation photographer. He currently has four magazine covers if I remember correctly: GA News, Kit Plane, Sport Aviation and one more I can't remember. I think I have OSH-lag still. I think our photos look beautiful and it is something I will remember the rest of my life thanks to Jim. Jim Koepnick jimkoepnick@mac.com koepnickphotography.com 920-216-3870 2 Quote
scottfromiowa Posted August 7, 2013 Report Posted August 7, 2013 Photos are among the best I have seen of any Mooney. Really great stuff. Thanks for sharing. I had a wonderful experience over the lake in a T6 (flying formation with a P-51). Back seat as a spectator. Sealed my fate for pursuit of my ticket. I am sure that there will be a future covergirl for one or more of these. Quote
201er Posted August 7, 2013 Report Posted August 7, 2013 What magazine cover are those going on? Quote
MooneyMitch Posted August 7, 2013 Report Posted August 7, 2013 Flying formation, very up close and personal for the photo shoot was a continual sweat for me. Not having done much formation training, the experience was quite intense. I slept very well that night. It sure was a blast though! 1 Quote
Joe Zuffoletto Posted August 7, 2013 Report Posted August 7, 2013 Awesome. Wish Jim was closer to me... would love to get pix of my bird over the Rockies. Quote
mooneygirl Posted August 7, 2013 Author Report Posted August 7, 2013 Hey Joe, Jim does travel for shoots. Just in case! I am not sure where our photos will end up, but I know that the video and photos will be in Boots on the Ground [documentary we are doing on Mooney]. It was thrilling and Mitch did an AWESOME job flying. I got to look out and see the beauty. Again, if you are interested let Jim know. He shoots for Flying, GA News, EAA, Sport Aviation, and more. He might be headed out to an event or shoot close to you. Quote
KSMooniac Posted August 7, 2013 Report Posted August 7, 2013 Surely you can grace the cover of MAPA Log. I had some good shots last summer, but alas my brother shot them all in landscape instead of some in portait... Quote

You will then see how good you can be. Safest way to fly to airventure and a great and professional a group of folks. Sent from my iPad Quote
Hector Posted August 7, 2013 Report Posted August 7, 2013 Awesome photos!! You have a beautiful bird! Quote
fantom Posted August 7, 2013 Report Posted August 7, 2013 Superb....thanks for sharing Jolie; and for flying up close Mitch. Quote
Cabanaboy Posted August 8, 2013 Report Posted August 8, 2013 How fast were you flying the Ovation? What altitudes? Cool photos! Quote
mooneygirl Posted August 8, 2013 Author Report Posted August 8, 2013 We planned the shoot at 130 kts. The photo plane was a V-tail Bonanza. We met at 3000 and in the process went up to about 9500. Jim took about 400 photos and several minutes of video. The photos that I posted here are just small files from Facebook. Again, this was such a wonderful experience. I am thinking about asking him about coming to MAPA in Kerrville on April 10-12. If there were enough interested owners we might be able to persuade him to come to KERV. 1 Quote
KSMooniac Posted August 8, 2013 Report Posted August 8, 2013 If several us could "share" a photo mission with Jim it might lower the cost down significantly. Say 3-5 owners get in a queue and just cycle through the photo mission. A backdrop of freshly-bloomed Texas wildflowers in the glorious Hill Country would be spectacular, and quite natural, for any Mooney! Quote

What does Jim charge for a typical photo shoot? Quote
mooneygirl Posted August 10, 2013 Author Report Posted August 10, 2013 Jim may be interested in coming to MAPA. There is a photo pilot/Bonanza in Dallas area that he has worked with. He also will be at Sun and Fun. There are the costs of the photographer, pilot, plane and fuel. The average shoot costs between $1000-1500. We have 400 plus photos. 1 Quote
RocketAviator Posted August 10, 2013 Report Posted August 10, 2013 I would be most interested in participating in some form of a shared pro photo mission. Please let me know. Quote
N9201A Posted August 12, 2013 Report Posted August 12, 2013 Anyone interested in getting photos of their aircraft in flight should DEFINITELY attend a Caravan clinic or practice session. Check out mooneycaravan.shutterfly.com and click on any of the previous events/practice sessions to see many, many of our Mooneys in flight. The truth is getting plenty of shots of your bird in flight is the a great -- but not the best -- reason to try flying formation (the first being the awesome stick-and-rudder piloting skills one builds). There are some terrific videos also, including one of Ned Gravel (who posted above) holding a steady no. 2 wingman position in the Caravan's all-Canada element touching down perfectly after the purple dot on 36L at OSH. That said, formation flying should NOT be attempted without thorough understanding of the concepts, briefing by all involved, and preferably an experienced "safety" in the right seat who will help keep you focused on the right sight picture. Take a look at our own Dave Martens' excellent tome that is garnering kudos from the entire formation flying community, available for FREE and downloadable on the Mooney Caravan website (www.mooneycaravan.com). Try it, you'll love it! No one who has tried it has not so far... Quote

Best regards, -a- Got it! http://mooneycaravan.com/flightProcedures/MooneyCaravanFormationGuide-Rev3-March2013.pdf I see you are from New Jersey. We have a growing contingent of formation pilots in the Northeast, when you are interested perhaps we can have you make contact with them and get out and try it. Quote
carusoam Posted August 18, 2013 Report Posted August 18, 2013 N9201A, I've been beating this drum for a while. But unfortunately, I've been unable to carry the torch. If the weather works out tomorrow, we can start up the conversation again with the NJ Mooney group. Mike, can we put that on the agenda. Best regards, -a- Quote
