PMcClure Posted July 18, 2013 Report Posted July 18, 2013 We flew from Pell City, Alabama to Fargo ND today. Dropped one kiddo off at Granna's in Huntsville and Lunch with the other in Iowa and in Fargo to watch the other wrestle in a national tourney. The only debate is what to do with our free day - Mt. Rushmore, MSP??? What other machine can change your life like that? Personal flying is not always as practical as you hope but when it works, it sure is great. http://flightaware.com/live/flight/N1051K 4
jlunseth Posted July 18, 2013 Report Posted July 18, 2013 The Mt. Rushmore thing is interesting, but because of the altitude restrictions you really don't get the best view. If you have never seen it, I would land at KRAP and drive up for the better view. If looking for other things to do, there would be: a weekend at Mackinac Island, Niagara Falls, New England in the fall for the leaves, Maine for some lobster, the Bahamas for just about the most beautiful place on the earth, Taos for the art crawl in September, Denver for the mountains, Kalispell for the continental divide and maybe some trout fishing, Missoula for a little fishing on the Clark's Fork. I guess that's about all I can think of for now. 2
PMcClure Posted July 18, 2013 Author Report Posted July 18, 2013 The Ovation is a great traveling machine and very comfortable (three of us are over 6' tall). Running LOP I can usually get 175-180 TAS at 14 gph and ROP I can get 185-187 TAS at 16-17 gph. With the family, I usually fill it to the brim and take off with 50-60 gallons of fuel. That gives us 2.5-3 hours plus reserve. That is about all they can take anyway. When alone, I fill it with gas and see how far I can go. Let me know the next time you are flying over and if you can stop at KPLR. We have cheap fuel!

Great airport despite the name. almost 1000 nm miles today and dinner at Kansas City Downtown. They have a great airport and cheap fuel at the SS pumps. Hanger 10 even gave us a ride downtown even though we didn't buy any fuel from them (because they don't sell 100LL).
jlunseth Posted July 20, 2013 Report Posted July 20, 2013 West Jet is good, they will take care of you. I am glad you enjoyed the trip. I was just there a week ago for some trout fishing. The Black Hills don't have the geographic relief the Rockies do, but fewer people to contend with. We had some great fishing. I caught a "grand slam" which in that area is a brookie (15"), a rainbow (18") and a brown (22"). That is all the species they have in the river, no cutthroats or bull trout. If you think KRAP is a poor name, land at KSUX sometime. They have been trying to get the FAA to change the name for years, probably decades.
yvesg Posted July 20, 2013 Report Posted July 20, 2013 I landed at KRUT two weeks ago... this does not seem too bad a name but when said, it sounds exactly like Crotte which in French (my mother tongue) is not a nice thing to deal with. Yves
PMcClure Posted July 20, 2013 Author Report Posted July 20, 2013 15 hours on the tach this week. Everyone did great and didn't hear, "are we there yet?" even once. The best FBO experience was at hanger 10 at wheeler downtown airport in Kansas City. They treated us great even though you have to buy fuel from the city at the ss pump.
jeckford Posted July 29, 2013 Report Posted July 29, 2013 logged 24 hours this week. Texas to MS to pick up family and then to Bozeman, MT for week of fly fishing and Harley riding. Great trip. Other family flew commercial and we got there faster and cheaper in the Mooney! 2
