Does anyone use a iPad mount attached to their windshield that places it near the compass? I was experimenting with places to put mine and realized on a flight the other day that it was causing 20 to 25 degrees of deviation. Mine is WiFi and was conntected to a SkyRadar ADS-B receiver at the time I noticed it. Has anyone else noticed this. Also, if you use a suction mount, where do you locate it?

Just to make it easier, I set my DG to the heading on my ipad.

The DG should be set to magnetic course. Does your iPad display true direction, magnetic direction or GPS direction [i.e., ground track]?

Good question, this is where my inexpierence comes into play. I set the DG to the compass while I am on the ground, check it with the runway heading when I am taking off. And then in the air, I adjust to the heading that foreflight is telling me. So I guess I am going off of GPS direction, which seems to work well.

If you place a headset on the dash you will have a similar deviation. One night I was flying IFR with my son to Georgia and was being vectored around thunderstorms. ATC called about my heading. I checked my compass and reset the DG. ATC came back and said I was off my heading by 90 degrees. I was getting ready to request no gyro vectors when i saw the headset on the dash backlit by a flash of lightning. My son had decided to recline his seat and go to sleep. I hadn't realized he took off his (black) headset and set it on the (black) dash.

Chalk up another valuable lesson.

What is your opinions about GPS heading on the DG?

Bad idea. Your GPS is giving you a TRACK, but your DG should be set to magnetic HEADING. Any crosswind will make these two disagree.

I personally think it's fine so long as you are always flying directly into or away from the winds aloft.   ;)

What I think my esteem colleague is saying is that you have as much chance of that happening if you bought a lottery ticket.
