mooney2201 Posted May 12, 2013 Report Posted May 12, 2013 what is the highest cht temps you have had on cyllinder #3,with o.a.t. around 80 degrees, on a m20 j....thanks,for some reason my cht temps are 416 degrees in cruse,is this normal, have had this plane for 15 years, just got edm 920,and noticed this temp, shop says edm is operating,100 percent normal.i always thought 385 degrees was the magic number,,,,,,thanks gary Quote
Piloto Posted May 12, 2013 Report Posted May 12, 2013 I had the same temps in my M20J. Check your cowl flaps trailing edge gap. For good cooling they are typically set for a 1/4" gap. The 1/4" gap will lower the CHT by about 50F. You will not loose any speed but prolong the life of the cylinders. José Quote
bumper Posted May 12, 2013 Report Posted May 12, 2013 Gary, It could be a number of things, but perhaps the most likely is the CHT probe type you have on #3. Being as the stock (original) probe is installed in the threaded well provided for that purpose, when an aftermarket analyzer is installed, they'll often use a spark plug gasket probe. These run notoriously hot. bumper Quote
Cruiser Posted May 12, 2013 Report Posted May 12, 2013 The EDM 920 is certified primary instrument so there should not be a problem with probes. Verify that all cylinders are setup the same for probe placement/type. Make sure there are no restrictions for cooling, #3 is in the back on the passenger side. Do a GAMI check for FF to be sure there is not a partially plugged injector. Finally, 416°F is way too high for the IO-360 something is wrong. You are right <380°F should be your target. Quote
