Guys - I'm needing to remove my right mag but my A&P is having a devil of a time.  He's saying that the angle bracket that the prop control cable is connected to is up against the mag making in almost impossible to remove.

I'm sure most of the 60's vintage C models have this same issue.  If anyone can share their technique on how they remove their right mag, I'd really appreciate it!

Since the mag was going in for service, he ended up popping off the contact cover and partially dismantling the mag to remove it.  I should of snapped a picture before he removed it.  Going back on will be another story.  We'll not have that luxury.

on my f the bracket can be removed. You will have to modify an allen wrench to it. Its bolted to the back of prop governor. Cut off short end of wrench short enough to get it on to capscrew. I extended the long arm and it works ok. As a last resort, remove lower cowling, attatch eng to hoist and take weight off. remove top motor mount bolts and loosen bottom ones. let engine sag down and you can gain a bit of extra room at rear.

On my F if you remove the cap/harness there is enough room to get it out. You may have to rotate the mag a little to be able to get to the 3 screws that hold the cap on.

I have slicks, bendix may be a little larger.

The right mag has a longer contact cover on the back than the left.  So we're having the mag shop swap it out for a shorter one.  Hopefully that will provide enough room to get it back in.

I do believe even with the shorter cover, it still hits the prop bracket, and you can only angle the mag up so far to clear the drive gear, and the studs, and I found it still hits. Easiest is to remove the prop bracket first, I just closed mine up from a new governor, and had to do the same thing.

I work with my mechanic most of the time so I can learn and last annual the mags had to be OH. I was trying to put them back on after OH and couldnt get the right one to fit back in there because of the gov cable bracket. Ken (mechanic) said let me try it, I stepped back and he worked it in there like it was nothing, left me scratchin my head.

Guys - I wanted to report back that I had my right mag converted to use the short contact cover.  That provided 1/4" of additional clearance from the governor cable bracket.  That 1/4" made all the difference in the world.  The mag slipped in with only a little bit of work.

So in this case, shorter is better.
