Find the best price online (spruce, gulfcoast, sarasota, chief, ect), deduct the current rebate from JPI and then reduce the price enough to make it worth someones time to go used (6 months warranty left) instead of new.

I'm doing the same as you and upgrading later in the spring to an 900 that I'll flush mount in the panel so I'm interested in what you get for your 830. Can your shop use any of your current sensors for the 930?

I bet you could get 2k for it, seeing as its a slide in replacement for a 700/800 and has a more modern display. Just out of curiosity, why the move up? Are you getting a new panel cut and want to ditch the ships gauges?

I think you can use the harness from a 700/800/730/830 for the 930 as well. Cuts down installation time/cost.

If you are not including the sensors and probes, harness etc it might be a tough sell, unless you find a buyer who has all that and wants to upgrade to the 830.  I alsready asked my partners about it, they are cash poor right now.

 

I would like that Century autopilot when you are done with it, though, for spares.

Thanks Byron and Steve for the compliment.  The price of a new 830 at Sarasota is $3,387 (http://sarasotaavionics.com/avionics/edm_830-4cyl), while the price at Spruce is $3,587.  Per a telephone call to JPI, they are not offering any rebates.  If I do upgrade, I understand that the 930 will use my current 830 sensors for CHT’s, EGT’s, fuel flow, OAT and oil temp.  If the current market price of my 830 is only $2,000, however, I will not be undertaking this portion of the panel upgrade.

The reason I mentioned the rebates is that JPI was offering a 3 or 4 hundred rebate through the end of last year and I wasn't sure it they had extended them or not. They usually offer them around airshows and the end of the year, so you might be able to get a good deal on a 930 by waiting. At Oshkosh 2 years ago they were offering $500 rebates and the retailers were giving discounts on top of that.

It would be nice to replace the two button JPI 830 with the four button JPI 900.  The main advantage is the the 900 can be Primary for RPM, MP, and Voltage.  It is also possible to re-calibrate the fuel sensors to add them to the 900, although the shop I spoke to about this recommended against doing so. With the 900 as Primary, several existing gauges can be removed, cleaning up panel space.  All to the good (if you are willing to give up some redundancy), but the case size of the 900 is larger than the 830, and since my 830 is flush mounted, this would, in my case, be too much work and expense for very little gain.

I just bought the JPI upgrade for my 700 , to the 830 . its a trade in program , spruce gets 1060 $ , JPI refunds me 200 $  so my net cost is 860 , I would bite , but my install is on my bonanza , so it is a 6cyl installation....

Just curious but can you just buy the sensors needed for the 900 if you kept the sensors only needed from the 830? The resale of the 830 may not be worthwhile but the overall cost of the 900 maybe less.

I, too, would like to get rid of as many legacy gauges as possible, but after completely redoing my panel last year, I am reluctant to have all new panels made up, with the resultant costs and down time. That is just a personal thing for me. I am simply passing on what my shop, Executive Aircraft Maintenance, told me about their experiences with Mooneys. I really like this shop, and trust them. In fact I will fly out to Scottsdale in the next several weeks and have them swap out my 430 W for a GTN 650. (no, the 430 W is not for sale - this is a trade in), and to add a GDL88 to the GTN 750.

Do you recall why they didn't recommend this? JPI told me the 900 is an STC replacement for ALL primary engine gauges. Is this incorrect and why would your fuel sensors require re-calibration? Thanks for any clarification you can offer.

I really don't know why my shop had their problems with the fuel "calibration". I was told that they installed a 930 in a Mooney with the fuel gauge readout, and that their technicians had problems with getting the JPI to read correctly. Personally, I use the fuel flow, flight timers, and the JPI fuel used, fuel remaining, and fuel required indications and match them with my flight plans and expectations. I trust the wing sight gauges more than the panel gauges. After about a 150 hours of using the JPI fuel flow, and adjusting the K factor, I find that I am seldom more than a gallon difference in filling the tanks after a three hour flight. As I said, I would have used the 900 instead of the 830 had it been available then. A little too big to fit in my panel recess.
