Retractable Step Boot?

Hey All,

While cleaning the bottom of my '63 C with the step retracted, I noticed what appear to be attachment holes in the bottom of the step. It appears there is a "boot" or some sort of fairing missing from the step. I found a couple of references to a rubber boot, but have no idea of a part number or picture of a step with the suspected part attached. Does anyone know of what I speak and/or have a pic or part number of same? Also, any ideas of where to get a parts catalog for my plane?

As Always, Thanks,

Jerry

My 65 C step had an aluminum fairing in the shape of the hole in the fuselage. The fairing itself is often damaged by feet missing the step. It was also a collector of dirt and grime.

A few screws held it in place. If you can't find it from Mooney, it would not be too difficult to have fabricated.

I like Dave's advice below...

Best regards,

The holes in the bottom of your step are for the fairing. I can't show you a picture, because mine's missing too. Basically, it's a flat, trapaziodal piece of sheet aluminum with two 90 degree tabs and some holes for the screws.

When I did my annual at LASAR, I asked them if they had a used one I could buy and they didn't. What they did do was make a paper pattern for me so that I could make my own. It really is a simple part. I haven't gotten around to yet though.

Thanks for the quick response, Dave is there a chance you could attach a copy of that template? From this and other topic/posts, it appears many do not have this fairing. I would love to have it.

I can when I get out to the hangar again. I left the template there. I haven't been out to the hangar in about a month now because my plane is busted and stuck in Red Bluff. Sounds like I might get it back next week though!

Kind of a long story, but the basics seem to be fuel system contamination caused by a fuel hose is the working theory. It was a diagnostic headache and of course not cheap. I really don't know what my "$100" hamburger is going to cost me yet. Sad thing is, because the plane broke and I got distracted trouble shooting, the cafe closed and I never got the hamburger! When all is said and done, I might make a post if people are interested in new and interesting ways your engine can fail you.
