KSMooniac Posted January 16, 2013 Report Posted January 16, 2013 Chicken strips are the un-used portion of the tread adjacent to the sidewall... big chicken strips = lack of leaning (ie turning SLOW) and no chicken strips = knee-draggin' turns. I have moderate chicken strips on my BMW K1200RS. Quote

I have moderate chicken strips on my BMW K1200RS. OK. Got it. A little boasting here, but my chicken stripe was down the center of the tire, after a race weekend I sold my take offs to the street riders for a profit!!! Probably wouldn't fit on your Beemer though! I do know a few 1200 riders that are damn good on those machines. They were sleepers for sure. Take them for granted and they would be gone!! Quote
bd32322 Posted April 6, 2013 Report Posted April 6, 2013 On the topic of Acts of God required... My Ovation is coming up time for an overhaul. Since everything FWF is going out to be improved, I did some homework. I can replace the NA IO550(g) with TN IO550(g) for a few dollars more (the cost of two turbos and a new exhaust system) This essentially would be an Acclaim without the Garmin G$MM Avionics. EVERYTHING is a documented, well proven system, accept for one thing, my serial number begins with a 29 and real Acclaims begin with a 31....? Real turbocharged engines benefit from low compression ratios, but TN engines continue to run even with major intake leaks. Notice the (g) tag in both their names... Nearly identical except for the turbos and exhaust... I was pretty excited about the opportunity to achieve Acclaim like performance at the minimal up charge of additional key hardware. The discrepancy in SN would cost a mint in FAA documentation...or an act of God. The next version of the Rocket would use something like the TN IO550(g), and it would be a mean traveling machine! Back to the drawing board... Best regards, -a- Is this really possible - to fit the TN engine I mean? Who has the STC etc? I was lookng for a rocket, but if this were possible, I have my eyes on a nice deiced ovation at my home field Quote

I heard through the rumor mill that tornado alley was considering an STC of their system to the ovation. Give them a call and ask, but my guess is its a pipe dream. Seriously I wouldn't turn my nose up at a good ovation with good equipment and from a seller you know on your field. I sure love my rocket, but I probably would be flying an ovation if I were in that situation when I was buying. 1 Quote
carusoam Posted April 6, 2013 Report Posted April 6, 2013 After all the research, it is Technically possible, engine, prop, TCs and cowling... But no STC is available for the Ovation, M20R. At least not yet... Thanks to the factory, the Acclaim is in it's own type bracket, M20TN. Keeping us from endlessly upgrading until we reach the top. The IO550 comes in a few varieties. The (g) is the original 280 HP power plant of the O1 and power plant of the TN Acclaim. The (n) is the 310 HP power plant of the 03. Small differences, but make sure you get the right one before committing... I am happy staying in the NA category on the East coast. The TN is probably nicer and easier choice near mountains. I went with the (n) after this thread... Big block, TN, speed brakes!, deice, and pressurization - that would be a nice Mooney... Best regards, -a- 1 Quote
benpilot Posted April 14, 2013 Report Posted April 14, 2013 Great review! Definitely want a Rocket or Bravo if I decide to buy a Mooney. Quote
John jolly Posted June 17, 2013 Report Posted June 17, 2013 I just got a rocket and do not have pressured mags. I am looking for input on weather pressurized mags are a must. Any other rocket owners out there that can let me know if they have pressurized mags. Quote
benpilot Posted June 20, 2013 Report Posted June 20, 2013 I would need to fly a 252 Encore and Bravo TLS before deciding how they stack up against the Rocket. The Bravo is newer and has more long body than the Rocket. Not sure how the controls feel or handle. If lighter and more fun to hand fly the Bravo would be the plane to beat. Quote
