Having TKS installed on the Acclaim next week.  I know there is a bit of a performance loss when installing TKS. 


Question is...  Do you think it would help to do the 310 hp upgrade to make up for the loss?  Would be great to have the TKS and not see a reduction of TAS.

Is the 310HP conversion supposed to increase your cruise at FL250 or just lower altitudes?


If so, what is the published FL250 cruise for an Acclaim with 310 ponies?

I inquired Mooney about this 310 conversion and was told that it just improves climb performance, not cruise; MooneyMax has not performed such conversion on Acclaims to date.  Perhaps the best way to get the numbers is to call Midwest directly and ask them for the facts, not a sales pitch.  I'm delighted with the same conversion on my Eagle, though, where there were measurable increases in performace.  Last time I checked Midwest webpage (2 weeks ago), they haven't published any numbers for the Acclaim conversion which strikes me since they do pat themselves in the back for the improvements in performance for Eagles and Ovations.   Expect a loss of 8 to 10 kts with TKS, but you'll have a much more capable airplane, and it's a fair tradeoff; you're giving away 4 minutes per hour with TKS at cruise speed, but you increase the usability of the plane in terms of not having to cancel due conditions.

Do you know how many ktas you loose with the TKS ? Here in Europe one of the strong points is that Mooney is actually a good ice performer.. Even if you plan to fly out of ice in Europe, sooner or later you end up in it.

Avidyne just launched a weather system for Europe, the MLX770. It costs around 10k plus installation. It uses a satellite telephone to download the weather data.

That's excellent news for Europe, Magnus.  Is the weather source reliable and accurate (as much as humanly possible)?  NOAA supplies the data for XM and sometimes the necessary uplink delay makes nasty surprises with fast moving storms, but still is the best thing to have in lieu of on board radar.

Yes it is, i'm happy it's here and it works pritty good. There are some other procects who uses that system but they were all around that price.

If you go by aerodynamics theory your speed increase is 3.5% when going from 280HP to 310HP. At 200kts (280Hp) you will get 207Kts (310HP) at same weight. Your climb rate will increase by 21%. At 1000fpm (280HP) you will get 1210fpm at 310HP at the same weight and IAS.

Got the plane back and TKS is now installed.  I did some testing and have lost right at 7 knots.  This is a standard Acclaim but we do have the new Type S prop.  We don't have the lower flap gap seals or the new composite front gear door that come with the full Type S package.  So I suppose it's a hybrid of sorts.  Our build was almost to the point where they switched over completely to the Type S and had used up all the "old" props, so even though we are not a Type S, we got the new prop.


I say that because I believe that the bulk of the loss of speed with TKS is the mods done to the prop.  Before, with the prop control all the way to the firewall, I would get 2490 to 2500 rpm.  Now, with it firewalled, I only get 2470 max.  That sound normal?  Should the TKS have slowed down the rpm?  I wouldn't think so.


A 7 knot decrease is ok in my book for the added safety of TKS and is a good trade-off, but it would seem like if I could get the prop spinnin' back up to 2500, it would shave some of that loss off.

Europe weather can actually be obtained via a sat phonea lot cheaper using the flymap system. I would also say 7kts is a small price o pay for having the peace of mind that you can safely escape icing and anyone who flies into known icing without it is an accident waiting to happen. listen carefully to this extract.   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SDnZD1J62Fc
