I'm sending my glareshield to Hector to rework it. Somebody in the past created this plate that holds up the middle of the glareshield and built a cover for the slit, where the screws mount to the little plate they created.

I guess it was modified to accept the cover plate....

Does anyone know what it came like from factory? Should I plan on deleting this little shelf under the glareshield?

Did they all come with a cover to cover the slit?

Definitely not like that on my 1980 M20J.  That looks like something added in the field.  Many people have their glareshield crack at that point as the plastic has to bend around the vertical tube.  In my plane, the interior shop cut out that part that was cracked and wrapped it with a matching pice glued to the structure under the tube so all you see is black but the glareshield goes on and off much easier.  I've seen others that have the center cut out but then have a flap in the leather/vinyl covering with velcro to cover that gap after installing the glareshield.  I'm sure Hector will know the best solution for you.

My 77 is not like that at all.    There's just a block of phenolic material attached to the cage, and the little cover plate screws into that.    Yours looks like it has been reworked quite a bit for whatever reasons, but that's pretty normal these days.

I would send Hector the pictures and ask him. He can do anything you want.

I did. But he will not be here when I go to put it back in so, just covering my bases. He just said send the top cover with it. I guess he’ll know how to make it work.

Bruce Jaeger used to make something similar. This is either an early version, or someone’s attempt to

Ah! Interesting. V helpful   I guess the point is… you have a bigger slit to fish through the center bar? Provide underneath support? I’m not sure I’m sold on it being useful in any way but I’ve also never been without it.  Bruce’s write up doesn’t really explain the purpose thoroughly or not that I can see.

Anything in the logs about it? This looks pretty custom :)

Never really looked! Not sure it would say much about why they did it. Just perhaps THAT they did it, but I don’t need proof of that. Lol

Yeah, that was just the installation instructions. But I see that it is back on the website. My glare shield had a bunch of cracks on other issues. I patched it and reinforced the weak areas with ABS sheet and glass cloth and filled in heat warped areas with plastic filler and then sanded it down, sprayed it with SEM texture coat and painted it with SEM colorcoat. Looks like new.

I bought and installed the Jaeger kit and it does make the glare shield easier to remove and by securing the center section it eliminated an annoying rattle. The kit comes with a powder coated metal cover that I found gets too hot in the sun and softens the glare shield plastic, so I fabricated one from ABS sheet.

Thumbs up for doing anything to remove rattles and vibration noise from the glare shield.    All those 'insignificant' noises add up to fatigue on long cross country's.  This includes leaky storm windows and door seals.

I've wondered if applying a fuzzy black fabric to the top of the glare shield would absorb some of the noise off the windscreen.

When Hector covered my glare shield, he cut a 1 1/4" section from the middle, behind the post.  He then made an aluminum piece about 3" wide with a step in it that was velcroed in place.

I still remove my compass when removing the glare shield.  I've had two professionals remove the glare shield and crack my compass mount.

The glare shield on my 1978 J was so easy to remove and replace. On my 1994 with the center hump it is a royal pain. I too remove the compass. Someone suggested lifting it up as high as possible and that helps, but it still takes some twisting to get it past the A pillars and the center post. I have some thin plastic sheets from report covers that I use to put between the A pillars and the glare shield to make it slide easier without marring. Every Mooney I've seen with the hump has the right side of the hump raised as if the glare shield doesn't fit properly. I worked mine over carefully with a heat gun and got it to fit much better.

Anyone else have any tips for removing and replacing it.

I have the pre-compass glareshield on my '91. (compass still on the post.) I put some cheap gaffer tape on the center post to protect it, undo the two screws, and lift up enough to unplug the glareshield lights harness. Then, i sort of "fold" it up in the middle which allows the corners to easily come past the side panels. Super quick and easy. I remove mine probably 6-8 times a year to blow out dust from behind the avionics before I clean the interior and it's proven to be easier the more I do it.

You remove the compass before folding the glareshield, correct? Mine won't clear the side panels without removing the compass. Of course, I'm careful about doing too much bending on 30+ year old plastic...

No, as I posted my compass is not part of the glareshield. I believe that came in 1993. My one is a ‘’91 model.

My '93 has the compass on the post. There is a '98 Allegro on Controller with the compass on the post as well. I think only the long bodies got the compass on the glareshield.

And only for a few years. All gaskets on "whiskey" compasses eventually fail. Having white kerosene drip down on the avionics stack when the gasket fails is not a good thing.

I wish they used whiskey - the kerosene smell when they leak is awful ;)
