I can’t tell if you’re just being obtuse because you can’t find anything to base your claim that it’s ok to install this light, or if you really expected me to post every single thing that was an exception to needing a TSO.

As I said before, I wasn't addressing a specific case, just your blanket statements, which were incorrect.

I didn’t make a blanket statement about all parts. I said -

To go on a certified aircraft it’s needs a TSO and PMA. - which was in reference to this topic of an experimental, non TSO, non PMA light

You cannot put “experimental “ parts on a certified aircraft.

Unless something is prohibited, we are allowed to do it.

Installing experimental, non TSO/PMA lights is prohibited.

I would LOVE to see you say that to the agent during a ramp check.

I have a N registered aircraft so it will fall under the FAA regulations. Secondly I believe that under Canadian rules something approved under FAA regulations it will be approved in Canada.

That's what I thought too.  But wasn't sure why you were bring "experimental" into it.  There are a lot of approved LED (and other) Landing Light and Wingtip Recognition lights that will give you a lot more output.  So it should be pretty simple to upgrade.

One other big plus about the LED landing lights is that I don't get the Low Voltage light as quickly.  I pretty much have to be at a low RPM where it would have come on anyway.

Two examples are: The Whelen Microsun LED taxi/recognition light or their SunRay Evo III landing recognition light. Both have internal pulsating options

You haven't said where you're expecting to install this, so I am assuming by replacing the whelen recognition light. The first one seems like a non-starter with its dimensions, The SunRay EVO III is smaller than the Whelen recognition light and is going to require your installer to fabricate a means to mount it in position - the whelen light as I recall just floats there due to its dimensions.

I suggest you discuss with your IA to see if he wants to tackle such a thing. You have so many options with the Whelen LED light an pulsers mentioned above that would not have the obstacles this would. Each obstacle, installation mounting and approval will cost $$.

Hi Paul, I mentioned in the beginning of the thread is that it's for the J and K wingtips which, as far as I know, only have strobe and position lights and not the recognition lights.

I've designed a bracket and a prototype (not installed) that will fit in there and hold either of those lights mentioned and a Whelen LED strobe/position light. I talked to my IA and he's willing to try and suggested NORSEE or similar avenue but I would do all the work looking for approvals, hence I'm looking here to see if anyone has experience with it. Not to mention saving some money too.

Actually most J&K's that have the K wingtip do have the Whelen recognition lights - except for the earlier models. I can't tell you what year they started but Whelen designed the the new LED recognition light specifically to replace the original recognition lights for the Mooney wingtips used in the J&K and up https://flywat.com/products/mooney-led-wingtip-recogntion-light

Its a minor mod to install these since they are a direct replacement for the lights used on later wingtip Mooneys. Pulsing them is a good improvement.

I use them with a LASAR pulser that is no longer available and think they work great as do many other Mooney owners.

Since there is no standard for these and you aren't replacing the other required lights your IA has much more slack in installing them, but its his opinion that matters here.

Thanks Paul, This is helpful and I think it will lead to something I can use.

To give credit where is it due, IIRC, @OSUAV8TER was the one who talked to Whelan about making the LED recog lights and then placed the minimum order so they would actually make a batch.

FYI, my 1986 M20K 252 has the tips with the recog lights.  I suspect that most every Mooney that came from the factory with the sculpted wingtips have them.  The flat tips do not.

The Whelen LED recog lights are awesome. I put them on my Bravo after seeing what the old style halogens can do to the wingtip lens (fortunately, it was not on my plane). Easy drop-in install and resonably priced (in aviation terms, anyway). Pulsing them may be anice addition.
