fantom Posted July 7, 2012 Report Posted July 7, 2012 I've got a boat captain friend who spends most of his time in the Islands. He puts no more than 25 hours a year on his Comanche 260 and it sits for months in a hanger in in Ft. Lauderdale. Exxon Elite + Camguard and a can of AvBlend when he's gone. Never a problem in over 10 years. Of course when he does fly, it's ROP ;-) Quote

1TJ Posted July 7, 2012 Report Posted July 7, 2012 Quote: jetdriven I have been a religious user of your Camguard and W100 Aeroshell, yet, 240 hours and 16 months into our ownership experience, we lost 3 lifters and the camshaft to spalling. The longest the aircraft ever sat was 7 days. Quote
jetdriven Posted July 7, 2012 Report Posted July 7, 2012 IO-360 A3B6D. 3600 TTSN (1977), 1350 SMOH (2001). new cylinders, new cam, and reground liftrs (Aircraft Service Specialties) at OH. W100 Aeroshell ans Camguard since we owned it. Aeroshell 15W50 since OH before we bought it. Quote
1TJ Posted July 8, 2012 Report Posted July 8, 2012 At 1110 hours you bought the plane. Any idea as to how it was utilized before you bought it? Oil analysis? Log books? How did you discover the spalled lifters and cam? Ed Edward Kollin Tecknical Director - Aircraft Specialtes Lubricants Quote
jetdriven Posted July 8, 2012 Report Posted July 8, 2012 It flew 150 hours per year from 2001-2006. (Tulsa, OK) 102 hours in 2006 61 hours in 2007 40 hours in 2008 16 hours in 2009. 15 hours in 2010 (includes 5 hour ferry to broker) 211 hours in 2011 20 55 hours Feb-Jun 2012. no oil analysis. Complete logs. We pulled the #1 cylinder and all lifters looked new. Shop overhaul in 2001. Ran great, oil analysis from when we bought it, Iron 30 PPM until 100 hours ago. Then 60 (little bit of metal), then 99 (1/4 teaspoon). As I said, it flew 240 hours in 16 months and never sat. It just quit on is, whichis surprising the care we gave it. It did have a new cam and reground lifters. all details here. :shake head......... what happened? http://www.mooneyspace.com/index.cfm?mainaction=posts&forumid=3&threadid=5197 Quote
Sabremech Posted July 8, 2012 Report Posted July 8, 2012 Byron, Sorry to hear about your engine issues. I don't think you'll find an answer as to why this happened to your engine. In contrast to the way you operate your engine, mine is not flown nearly as much and will sit for 3 months some times in the hangar. I don't use any additives just Exxon Elite, which has been run in it for years. I use the same brand and weight and do not switch viscosities. Will I encounter the same problem you have? Maybe, maybe not. It's metal and nothing can be guaranteed by the use or non use of additives. It's nice to think they will help and maybe they do, but when engine troubles such as yours come up it casts doubt as to their effectiveness. These are my observations with my experience maintaining my Lycoming to Merlin engines. Quote

Because, quite frankly, I don't believe you! If you believe this as you stated it, I got a bridge up here to sell you! Quote
jeckford Posted July 8, 2012 Report Posted July 8, 2012 Great discussion and might I say one of my favorite things about Mooneyspace is consistency. You can always count on fantom and smiles to take a jab at each other ;-) Quote
