What’s the easiest way to remove the tail pipe on a Bravo?

It’s looking like I need to either remove the firewall heat shielding so I can rotate the pipe and pull it out through the engine mount to the aft,  or remove the turbo so I can pull it forward.

It just dawned on me that I could give myself more maneuvering room if I put it up on jacks and retract the gear, getting the nose gear door out of the way. But then the jack is in the way?

How have you guys done this?

Hey Rick.  I just tore my engine down for overhaul.  As I remember, the tail pipe was the last item we had left until we removed the engine mount from the firewall.  There might have been a way to get it out earlier, but if so, it wasn't obvious.  Even after we removed the turbo, the tail pipe was still sandwiched pretty well behind the engine mount frame.  Maybe others have another experience.

Rick, just had a discussion with the IA that maintains my Bravo.  He confirmed that on mine, it is necessary to loosen the mount to get the tailpipe out.  Assuming all Bravos have the same engine mount / tailpipe configuration, you can probably use a hoist on the engine, loosen the mount truss, and pull it forward enough to extricate the tailpipe.

Ohboy.

I heard from another Mooney IA that if I brush up on my Chinese puzzle solving skills there is a way to get it off without further disassembly. We’ll see how long my patience hangs in.

Thanks for the follow-up!

Sometimes I’m astounded, when doing new things in retirement, by my own lack of observation/understanding, two things that were absolutely critical in my professional life.

So, turns out I didn’t see that there is a slip joint joining the waste gate bypass elbow to the tail pipe and I was attempting to remove the whole thing as one assembly. Which I’ll say is impossible without pulling the engine mount. It wasn’t until my second conversation with an expert that I understood when he said I needed to get the elbow loose that he didn’t mean loose from the airplane around the engine mount, he meant loose, as in separated, from the tail pipe. <_<

I have the slip joint soaking in Aerokroil and expect to pull the elbow later today or tomorrow, allowing the tailpipe to fall out (relatively speaking) for the trip to Plane Exhaust for IRAN/overhaul.

Learning is fun, sometimes exhausting. Once again I demonstrate I can be dense but I’m trainable.

So ends my help needed request.

You should have that turbo and installation inspected by somebody that knows what they're doing.  Sounds to me like you've traveled out of your lane.

Everything will be put back together by my IA. Disassembly I like to do myself for the learning experience.
