This is an invitation to a Mooney Ambassador event at beautiful Kern Valley, CA on May 26th.  Rick Lach, the airport manager attended Oceano Airport Celebration this past weekend and pulled me aside to ask "how can I get your Mooneys to come to Lake Isabella?"  I said, "we just need an airport day or display day."  Well folks, their airport day is May 26th.  If you are in California, Nevada or Arizona you might be able to pull off this cool Memorial weekend fly-in.  Let me know if you are meeting us there!

This information from the airport manager Rick Lach.  Come on Mooneys, let's go!

For those that want to fly Young Eagles we have a ramp on the north just for that. Those that don’t want to fly Young Eagles I’ll set up front row parking to display there airplanes.

I wish my motor was ready and in 3891H:  I love that airport!  Be careful everyone and check the winds (and the windsock) prior to landing!!!

Thanks for the tips Dan.  In talking with Rick the mgr, he echoes many of the tips you listed.  Another idea is for folks to "fly" it with Google Earth, gives you a bit of a site picture too. Hope you can join us.

Mooney Pilots,

If you'd like to display your aircraft at Kern Valley please arrive prior to 9am. The ramp will be open to the public at 9am. Arrivals are welcome throughout the day, but if/when the ramp fills with planes and people we'll park you over at the camping area.

Airport Notes:

-No fuel available at Kern Valley. Multiple fuel options 30-35NM away. TSP, MHV, L45, IYK. TSP normally has the cheapest SS fuel around (36NM S of L05).

-Kern Valley Airport Cafe will be open all day. Great place to for breakfast and lunch.

- CTAF 122.8 TPA 3594' RIGHT traffic 17. Downwind tight due to terrain west of field.

- Watch/listen for traffic. Young Eagles flights will follow a clockwise flow around Lake Isabella at 3500ft (122.8) Runway 17 perferred. Yellow Steerman biplane giving rides operating over Lake Isabella.

- Fly-in Camping is available or numerous lodging options in Kernville. The local B+B is right on the river and will pick you up at the airport http://www.kernriverinn.com/

Look forward to seeing you at this jewel of an airport!

It looks like we have three or more Mooneys coming into Kern Valley on Saturday.  Rick Lach the airport manager suggests we arrive before 9 to get into our spots.  After 9 is fine, but no guarantee of parking as a group.  Fly safe. Winds are supposed to calm down, at least for us, tomorrow.

This is going to be a terrific Kern Valley Airport Day with good community attendance.  A perk for this airport is close access to the Kern River, just to the West of the airport campground.

I'm told the river is running quite well so bring your life jackets, tubes, rafts, etc. just in case your kids get board around airplanes.  Personally, I just could not imagine that, but it does happen. Wink

What a blast we had today in Kern Valley.  It was a bit chilly so the Young Eagles flights were postponed until next week.  Dave Marten was there early and served as our personal ASOS.  We had a 50 minute flight then saw beautiful Lake Isabella and before you know it we were on the famous right downwind for 17.  Check out the photo album for our "upclose and personal with the terrain".

Perhaps due to the fact that Young Eagles was cancelled, we found ourselves swarmed by kids and grown-ups. Luckily Mark Meyers, a 231 owner from Oxnard joined the fun.

Another interesting note... they had their emergency responders on display and sure enough a fire broke out on a neighboring hill.  It was very cool for the community members to see the response by the air attack helicopter.

We did a radio and newspaper interview and just had a super happy time.  We talked with about 25 kids and many grown ups.  I would say that all 25 kids got in Maggie II.  Some even got to wear our Zulu 2 and Bose headsets.  [Yikes].

What a great day. Nothing fancy just the love of our airplanes and trying to inspire the love of flight.

Next up for the Ambassadors:

June 9th, 2012 Porterville, Ca. Air Faire KPVT.  This years event includes aircraft displays, hot air balloons, a kids area, pilot participation events, classic car displays, local vendors and of course, incredible aerobatics! There will be something for the whole family. Last year we won the More the Merrier award, as well as the speed trial, and the flour bombing contest.  Camping available.  Point Person: Jolie Lucas

June 16-17th Columbia Ca. Father's Day Fly-In. 022 46th Annual event.  The fun begins with a traditional Father's Day Pancake Breakfast from 7:00 to 11:00 am on both days. The entire family will enjoy seeing the Experimental, Classic and Warbird aircraft, along with airplane and biplane rides, aviation vendor booths, food and beverage booths, CDF aircraft and demonstrations, aircraft fly-bys, a Saturday night BBQ and more! Activities will also include a spot landing and flour bombing contest. Don't miss this year's event, it promises to be fun for everyone!  Last year we won the flour bombing and the spot landing contests.  Camping available.  Point Person: Mitch Latting

June 22-24th: Indianapolis Air Show.
We were asked again this year  for our Mooney Ambassador display. They were just awarded the 2011 Air Show of the Year award last week at the International Council of Air Shows and this year they'll be featuring the Thunderbirds.  We anticipate we'll get space for 4-5 aircraft on the ramp and there is parking outside the display for others if we exceed this. Should be a great event for us again this year! There is a commitment to display Friday through Sunday due to the size of the venue.  There is a lodging discount available and entry to the show is complimentary.  Point Person: Jim Elswick

July 21st, 2012:Marks the date for the 5th annual Princeton, BC, Canada
International Air Show. This years show, "A Salute to Warbirds" will feature a number of iconic Second World War airplanes along side modern air force aircraft. Vintage general and passenger aircraft, search and rescue demonstrations, air force trainers, aerobatics, lots of pyrotechnics, some surprises and lots more make this event a must see in 2012.

What an incredible day for our fly ins and our Mooney Ambassadors. Beautiful warm summer day in Princeton and the Similkameen Valley, incredible scenery, lots of camaraderie and one heck of a show. Fly ins are encouraged to pre-register (registration will commence in May) Registration provides you with admission, access to the air conditioned terminal building and a light lunch; all for only $10 per person. Point Person: David Janke.

August 24-26th, 2012  KTVL South Lake Tahoe, Lake in the Sky Airshow
Join us at Lake Tahoe in 2012 for the 23rd year celebration of America's High Altitude Air Show. The Mooney Ambassadors are the only type club that has specifically been invited by the event administration for the past several years. We had 22 airplanes in 2009, 14 in 2010, 24 in 2011 how many are coming in 2012?  Friday night dinner is a salute to Veterans who have served or are serving our country. Saturday is the big day, and we expect upwards of 11,000 visitors.  There is an opportunity for six Mooney Ambassadors to take place in the air show by doing high-speed passes.  We typically get a nice hotel rate and car rental rate for this event.  Point Persons: Michael Golden

I think we might have inspired some future pilots today!  Thank you to Jolie, Mark, Dave Marten, Rick Lach and the Kern Valley Airport folks.

The airport day attendees got to experience a Kern Valley Fired Dept. helicopter depart  with a water bucket in tow.  A small fire had broken out on a hilltop to the South.  This is just another great way this ga airport serves their community.  Cool

Mitch/Jolie/Mike,

Thanks for your partcipation at Kern Valley! Despite the winds a couple hundred folks from the community visited their airport! Great pancake feed by the booster club.

We'll fly the Young Eagles Sat 2 June which is also a FLY-IN/SPLASH-IN at Kern Valley/Lake Isabella. Probably won't be able to add floats to the Mooney in time, but will be fun participating with wheels!

Young Eagles: 2 June 9am-12noon! Pilots/volunteers needed!

Following the Young Eagles fly to Bakersfield Muni (L45) for their annual EAA BBQ!

Thanks again for all the work you do promoting GA and the Mooney!
