bcg Posted July 11 Report Posted July 11 It's about time to renew my medical and I'm thinking about maybe just going BasicMed because it covers everything I have done, although I would like to fly to the Caribbean at some point and it won't work for that. Anyway, I'm reading through the physician check list and I come across #9.... Seriously? The FAA want's the doc to examine our butt hole? What? Surely I'm missing something here.... I guess we should just be glad they don't have to examine it "digitally." 2 Quote
EricJ Posted July 11 Report Posted July 11 Do you still have one? I think it's just an inventory check box. 7 Quote
Hank Posted July 11 Report Posted July 11 I've had 2 Basic Med doctor visits, ain't nothing ever been done back there . . . . 1 2 Quote
Shadrach Posted July 11 Report Posted July 11 The first class three medical I ever attained as a student awkward. I was all of 24 years of age and after the exam had concluded I said “so that’s it?” and the AME said in a sort of creepy way “That’s it, unless you think you should have a prostate exam” to which I quickly said “no thanks” and headed for the cashier. If that AME is still in practice, I bet that he’s quite pleased with the basic med examination checklist. Quote

0TreeLemur Posted July 11 Report Posted July 11 My Doctor laughed his off when he got to that one! He asked me if I had one and checked the box. 2 Quote
Air pirate Posted July 11 Report Posted July 11 My AME doesn’t poke around back there , I think I’ll pass on Basic Med Doc asked for a urine and stool sample once, I was in a hurry so I just left him my underwear 4 Quote
Utah20Gflyer Posted July 12 Report Posted July 12 I’m not sure why everyone is so upset about the government being interested in your butt hole. It just shows they care. 3 Quote

hammdo Posted July 12 Report Posted July 12 Oh, he did… He Said, ‘Checking the butt? NOPE’… then I gave him the report… BTW, I GoTo my Cardiologist as he makes sure the ticker is good… he does a lot of FAA SI tests… -Don 1 Quote
N204TA Posted July 12 Report Posted July 12 My first AME was in 1985 and a prostate poke was required. In fact, for many years, we in the ATC business used to joke about going for our annual fingering and then, they just stopped doing that. Of course, then the running joke became asking everyone if they requested one anyway. The doc I use now for my Class 2 doesn’t even do hernia checks anymore. Quote

EricJ Posted July 12 Report Posted July 12 You just have to hope that when your doc does the prostate exam he doesn't have both hands on your shoulders. 5 1 Quote
midlifeflyer Posted July 12 Report Posted July 12 My PCP questioned that one so I showed her the AME Guide in the same entry on the 8500-8. The doctor can answer it based on medical history rather than physical exam. Quote
GeeBee Posted July 12 Report Posted July 12 I had my Basic Med exam last week. The doc got to that part and said, "No finger but I got to check". She called in a witness. I dropped trousers, bent over on the table, grabbed hold of my butt cheeks and I said, "See, no shivs and no contraband", she said, "I do see.a politician, how did he get up there". 4 Quote

When my Dad was flying in the Navy, the Flight Surgeon was doing an annual exam on one of the other pilots. Time came for the prostate exam. He put on hand on the guys shoulder, started the exam, and nodded the corpsman over to put his hand on the guys other shoulder. The story went, his head snapped up, looked left, looked right, looked left , looked right and the scream could be heard halfway across the airfield. 5 Quote
Coachella Bravo Posted July 12 Report Posted July 12 I'm on my 3rd Basic Med, and have not had a prostate exam. Had them from the urologist, but not for the Basic MED 1 1 Quote

Tommooney Posted July 13 Report Posted July 13 I don't understand what you guys are joking about. Its about safety. I've had third class exams since the 1970's that included the prostrate exam. Every two years Dr Dooty regularly did the prostrate exam. In 2012 he said he felt one side too big. Gave me the third class that day but told me to see a specialist. I did. Turned out he was right. It had to be removed surgically. I may be alive now thanks to his finger exam. Later I thanked him and he said I was not the only one he had found. Dr Dooty has passed away since then. I guess its something for young pilots to dismiss but as I approach 50 years of flying with out an accident, I am thankful for all the Dr Dooty out there. He was a good man. I hope you all make it to the 50 years milestone of flying without incident. Good luck Tom 2 Quote
M20F Posted July 13 Report Posted July 13 Flying basic med versus third class today, might want to get that finger and a colonoscopy; just saying….. Quote
Skates97 Posted July 13 Report Posted July 13 Having a good friend pass away from colon cancer without ever having had a colonoscopy I'm a big proponent of getting it done. https://intothesky.com/2024/05/01/get-your-exhaust-checked-aka-a-colonoscopy/ 1 Quote
