Curious.  Was there ever a time when M20 exhausts pipes were partially recessed into that cupped area in the bottom of the cowl?  Have they ever trailed more in the direction of the airflow?  If not, what's the purpose of that concave cupped area behind the exhaust?  Just wondering if my exhaust tail pipe angle is optimal.  Thanks.

Cupped area behind cowl improves airflow through engine

I guess it would. Duh.  Need to take another look on the other side with the cowl flaps closed.  I was fixated on the exhaust which didn’t seem efficiently aligned with the airflow.

My G looked similar until I replaced the entire exhaust system with one from Knisley Welding.  The Knisley sticks out even further, to the point the guys I formation fly with tell me I can't refer to the G as a "she" any more.  Yet I picked up a few knots with the switch.
