I've seen panels with just two GI-275s and that's it. Having one backing up the other would scare me. Especially after a new software release. That doesn't strike me as a real back-up solution and how they ever got that approved is beyond me. Here's one where two GI-275s failed - thankfully he had more instruments (5th post in the thread)  Please stop identifying this a dual failure.  The failure was the pilot left the cover on the pitot and went flying. Granted, there was what should be considered a 'defect' in the system response - but not a failure. IFR required instruments include turn coordinator AND rate of turn indicator.   Quote

First, I think the GI-275 is one of the most innovative products ever introduced. It allows a huge upgrade to legacy panels without having to do a complete new panel. However, in the context of where I posted this on the thread, people were discussing whether it was a good idea to dump all of the instruments and just go with two GI-275s only. My point was that I don't want one instrument of the same type backing up another instrument of the same type, such as pictured on this panel: When both instruments go black at the same time I don't think it really matters, after the fact, whether we call it a failure or defect - they both are unusable. But if you prefer defect, I'll concede. But either way I still would want other instruments backing up two GI-275s. I would want to have to go through what this guy did: https://www.beechtalk.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=198092&start=120 Quote
jetdriven Posted June 16, 2024 Report Posted June 16, 2024 I don’t use pitot tube covers for that reason anymore; leaving it on is more of a hazard than having it get obstructed possibly. Also, I would still have some kind of independent other primary source of attitude information whether that’s a G5 or a plain old iron Gyro or a Castleberry 14 V electric attitude indicator but something.
