inverter powers

What is the inverter in my M20k (252) giving power to?  

I'm in the middle of the rats nest phase of an avionics upgrade, and I'm trying to determine if it is still needed and cleaning up under the panel (read: the wire from the breaker is cut and I have no idea what is was plugged to).

M20K 252 is 28V and the inverter reduces to 14V for aux power adaptor to protect the 'handhelds' you might plug into the cigar lighter.

Maybe I am incorrect, my electrical drawing shows the inverter CB wire going to the optional autopilot power connector:  JK-PL06A,

And the Cigar CB is 28V.

Inverters convert DC to AC.  They may also change voltae.

If the wire to the breaker is cut it's not being used, so should be removed. If you an snap a picture of who made it and what model it is, it probably corresponds to something King that used to be in the panel but the tech was too lazy to clean it up when doing a panel upgrade.

This is one reason you'll get a wide spectrum of quotes from different shops for avionics work. Some shops don't untangle the mess under the panel, just work around it. A good question to ask is do they remove all wiring with everything that's coming out? If they don't I'd pick another shop.

I thought an inverter changed DC to AC and a converter changed from one DC voltage to another?

Converting DC to a higher voltage DC is usually called a DC-DC converter.   Going down in DC voltage is usually just a regulator.

A converter is just 2 inverters back to back.  Given that it probably went to the autopilot connector on my 252 wiring diagram, it could have been for a 26VAC inverter that is used in some autopilot / HSI installations.  Or to drive a 14v autopilot computer in a 28V airplane.

I agree, unused wiring should be taken out, alll the way back to a connector. Mooney has dozens of CPC connectors and with the correct pin remover it is easy to pop them out.

And with a full size Mooney wiring diagram, why not mark up what you have done and keep it with the airplane records.

Yeah I thought about the ambiguity when I wrote that - I meant the 'original paper size', not a scaled down version.  I did see a full size wiring diagram at the cub crafters factory, complete with 'photos' of each connector, spice and terminal.  The wires were pulled in place on a pegboard over this drawing and the tech reached alongside him to grab terminals etc.  The first harness took 11 hours to make, and it wasn't long before it was down to 3 hours.

Different topic, but I agree with Derek Boxwell that avionics shops should have a few spare trays and pre-wire avionics stacks before even ordering the expensive stuff.  Makes no sense to have $80 to 100k of avionics on the shelf will plodding through building up a harness.  And makes no sense waiting for the customers plane to arrive before starting.  The 'good shops' get the avionics harness substantially complete on the bench, and then bring the customers plane into the hangar for the last 2 weeks.

Don’t forget, if you yank it, a new W&B may need to be created. That is one reason why stuff is sometimes left behind that is no longer needed (so the W&B does not have to be modified). The math is not that hard, but I believe it does require a sign off.

If he's removing old avionics and adding new avionics, the W&B will need updating anyway. May as well remove and weigh the old wiring!

Did you once have a KCS 55A? I believe some installations required a 400Hz inverter. @Jake@BevanAviation would know.
