McMooney Posted May 3, 2023 Report Posted May 3, 2023 Mooney spacers, anyone know the original paint type used on a 1974 M20e ? would really be helpful thanks Quote
Yetti Posted May 3, 2023 Report Posted May 3, 2023 I tried to match the codes. They are in the S&M manual. Rustoleum Gloss white works. My Grumpy IA seems to like Krylon. Quote
Hank Posted May 3, 2023 Report Posted May 3, 2023 Take an inspection panel to your local store that supplies paint to body shops. They can mix a pint and put it in small jars or even a spray can, and it will match. Quote

kortopates Posted May 4, 2023 Report Posted May 4, 2023 Not really odd at all, i assume you have a ‘75 model manufactured in ‘74.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote
McMooney Posted May 4, 2023 Author Report Posted May 4, 2023 second part of the question, is it possible to still get paints based on the given color codes ? did get an auto paint place to mix a pint of each green Quote

Reds are the most sensitive to change… Chemical stability and UV light is probably the culprit… My M20C used a Krylon spray can with really good results… surface corrosion fighting… My M20R visits an aviation paint shop every decade or so… general wear and tear… Best regards, -a- Quote
Pinecone Posted May 5, 2023 Report Posted May 5, 2023 One thing to consider if you pull an inspection panel for color matching, if the airplane spent some time outside, the underside and top side colors will be different due to sun effects. Quote
McMooney Posted July 2, 2023 Author Report Posted July 2, 2023 MS, seems i went crazy today. started off thinking of going flying ended up with parts of birdy covered in primer. originally was gonna be just the door but that paint just kept flaking. prob take another few days to get her totally primed and sanded. 1 Quote

Are you just hand sanding and, if so, what are you using? Also, what primer and paint? Mine needs something similar. Quote

Yes, just hand sanding for now, really didn't want to get overly aggressive with it. mostly used a scotch-brite pad, then some 400/600 grit paper to make sure the primer had a surface. the primer is a ppg epoxy primer to seal the surface. my first time using it, hoping it sands really well. next will most likely be some buildup primer then a sealer prior to paint. 67 m20F chump Posted July 2, 2023 Report Posted July 2, 2023 I painted the wing on my plane. It was a huge PIA. I think it’s one of those jobs you want to pay a shop to do. I had some trouble with primer blisters. If the primer was still gassing off it lifted when I painted. This was my first try at painting. Epoxy clogs paper fast. If you can’t get the paint on fast I think I would scotch bright and clean then paint. I watched a ton of videos about painting before I did it. I also have some issues with the clear sticking on my stripes. The photo showed the worst of it. Quote

So day 2 couple lessons, 1. epoxy primer is TOUGH, feels stronger than the aluminum. think i'm going to skip the epoxy for the rest of the touchups. paint only needs to last another 4 or 5 years anyway. now when i redo the whole plane, if not chromate, epoxy will def be the base. It's like coating the aluminum in impenetrable plastic. 2. set a limit as to what you will do, i originally started trying to fix a really bad spot, now i'm sitting her wondering how long it'll take me to sand and pre the rest of the cabin Quote
