Happy Tuesday everyone!

New to the boards and new to Mooneys frankly. I am in the market and I just can't argue that Mooney checks about all the mission boxes I can think of. That said, I've never been up close to one to kick the tires so to speak. Hoping to connect with some local owners and the opportunity to get "up close and personal" with Mooney aircraft.

Hoping someone wouldn't mind giving me a walk around one day. By no means expecting to take a flight but wouldn't turn down one either ;) (I would cover incidentals if so).

Appreciate you stopping by my post.

Welcome to MooneySpace!  While you are waiting for that "walk around", if you share some of the boxes that you need to check, I'm sure you will generate responses.

Thanks Boomer.

For me and the family we're wanting to travel the Eastern Seaboard, Florida and potentially the Bahamas out of the Cincinnati area with good range (500-600nm loaded) and speed (140ish kts). The wife doesn't fly extremely well so quick en route trips help with that.

The "unknowns" for me are cabin size. She is little and we have 2 young boys (7 and 9). I know rear space might become an issue for them at some point so that's where my size comes in haha. How much space will be behind me in the left seat. I'm 6'1'' and 240. I know the Mooney has that sport's car fit so curious how I'll shoe horn into it while being comfortable on a 3 hour flight. Again, just those unknowns having not been up close or sat in one.

According to the tape measure, the Mooney cabin is about the same width as any of the other comparable airplanes, but it has a different seating position and cabin height.  The designer, Al Mooney, knew that one way to get speed was to reduce the cross-sectional area.  He did that by reducing cabin height, and arranging a more reclined "sports car" seating position.  That said, at 6'1" and 240, you shouldn't have any problems, especially if your wife is small.  While the older "short body" Mooneys have less room for the back-seaters, when your seat is in position to fly, it can't be back all the way, or you probably wouldn't be able to reach the rudder pedals.  Long-winded explanation -- only way to know for sure is sit in one.  The restriction you may experience is that, like most small, single-engine certificated airplanes, you can't have full seats, full fuel, and full baggage.  I don't have the numbers for all the various models, but it might be educational to run a weight and balance for a typical trip.  My airplane has 107-gallons of fuel capability and, if I filled it up, I couldn't take much more than my toothbrush, but I get amazing speed.

I don't know how much noodling around you have done here on MooneySpace, but if space is a potential issue for you, the broad strokes of the Mooney models are:

M20C and M20E are short-body
F, J, and K are mid-body
M and on are long-body

The jump from C and E to F/J/K probably gives the most notable change (I think it's 5 inches added leg room in back).

Appreciate that info! That does help as I peruse the forums when I read short/mid/long body. I now have a sub-model for reference!

Hi Jason - If you are still wanting to take a look at a Mooney, I have a '78J in Columbus that I would be happy to show you.

Shoot me a PM if you are interested.

Short Body Mooneys are great for young families…

By the time the kids hit middle school… a B747 won’t be big enough to separate them….

Mid Body Mooneys are great for full sized adults always traveling together…

Long Body’s are just more Mooney… bigger faster everything you want in one plane…

Best regards,

And higher fuel flows. :D

As for cabin size, side to side, it works great for the person not flying to move their seat back one or two notches.  So shoulders are not rubbing.

I'm based out of I69 and happy to meet up with you. There's a very experienced Mooney CFII/A&P based out of LUK who helped me with prepurchase and transition training into my C model last year.

solid. I would appreciate that. I'll send you my info.  Do you know CFI named Austin Zalac out of Sportys?
