Hank Posted February 9, 2012 Report Posted February 9, 2012 Sure does sound interesting! Especially since Tower had the gall to fuss at me for not taxiing immediately after my clearance readback, as if the cleared route would magically enter itself into the GPS. People wonder why GA pilots don't favor towered airports . . . And no, I will not try to program the GPS while taxiing, after dark, at an unfamiliar airport! But I am not a first adopter in anything, and do not mind waiting on actual user reports on how this thing works. Any takers?? Quote
thinwing Posted February 9, 2012 Report Posted February 9, 2012 Wow is right...I am having the install done next month...transforms the 530w/430w into a different beast and adds victor airways! All for 2k and about 500 install..the downside is I thonk you lose crosstalk function between a 530w and 430w if dual installed...will report back if it was worth it...kpc Quote
Vref Posted February 9, 2012 Author Report Posted February 9, 2012 They probably don't realise yet (I assume it's US victor airways only..) this but for the European airways structure this box could make life a lot easier. It Fills the route segments in between.....A lot of potential here to make the 4 and 530 go a long way further.... Looking forward to have some real life feedback rgds Luc Quote
thinwing Posted February 9, 2012 Report Posted February 9, 2012 luc..I think it bypasses even the 650/750 touch screen...my installer is saying Garmin is rather mum about this...kinda sour grapes why didnt we invent this...the box communicates with the 530w or 430 w using an rs232 com port on the Garmins ,normally used for crosstalk between units. My installer says Garmin doesnt guareente it will still work after a system software update...I said fine when was last 530w software update..he said a long time ..we wontbdo another...kpc Quote

jlunseth Posted February 9, 2012 Report Posted February 9, 2012 OK, so where do the waypoints for a Victor airway come from. From the Jepp database, or from a database in the Voiceflight unit (which is then going to have to be periodically updated to make sure it is accurate). If it is in the Jepp data (probably has been since the 480), then shame on Garmin for not using it. Quote
John Pleisse Posted February 9, 2012 Report Posted February 9, 2012 It will further bolster the lifespan of the GNS series and maybe others (subject of the adjacent GNS 430 thread). The price seems fair. I'll let them shake the bugs out for a year or two first. Realllllllly slick. Quote
thinwing Posted February 9, 2012 Report Posted February 9, 2012 i am getting real excited about this ,especially for ifr reroutes so popular in socal...instead of n1050q ive got a change in your routing advise when ready to copy ....ok socal approach what is it this time?...after palm springs ,intercept victor 386 ,soggi than rest as filed...(dang we were palm springs direct palmdale...where is v386??)Grab the ipad ,find that v386 is right off of palm springs and soggi is on the airway so just have to enter soggi after psp...knob twiddle twiddle twiddle twiddle..oops wrong direction and I inserted new way point BEFORE psp... Yikes id better get this in we are 5 miles from palm springs!! ........now its push second push to talk switch and papa sierra papa victor three eight six sierra oscar gulf gulf india enter......too cool...hope it works cause this thing is going to get my head out of the cockpit looking for traffic again...kpc Quote
thinwing Posted February 9, 2012 Report Posted February 9, 2012 Installer says...no free ride ..it means another box to update because all the way points for victor airways are contained in the new box...but how often do airways change...? Quote
Piloto Posted February 9, 2012 Report Posted February 9, 2012 Personally I think that the easiest and sure way to enter a routing is by touching on the screen the actual waypoint on the map for the route like is done on the GTN 750. Also there is the possibility of missing ATC calls while entering data by voice. I would rather spend $2000 on a passive collision avoidance device than on this. José Quote
Cris Posted February 9, 2012 Report Posted February 9, 2012 I understand that initially the database will be provided free of charge but Voiceflight reserves the right to charge in the future. Presumably that is to cover the possible new FAA costs. Quote

fantom Posted February 9, 2012 Report Posted February 9, 2012 What does the box do if I utter the famous, "Oh poop" command? It could get ugly ;-) Quote
DonMuncy Posted February 9, 2012 Report Posted February 9, 2012 A few years ago, the company I worked for bought me a voice operated document system. The length of time it took me to straighten up the errors it made in my dictation far outweighed the value of having it do the typing to start with. Perhaps this system is just better, or perhaps the limited number of fixes or victor airways makes this system workable. Quote
PTK Posted February 9, 2012 Report Posted February 9, 2012 I am extremely skeptical about its functionality in the cockpit. Maybe there is a good reason G went the touchscreen direction. Quote

fantom Posted February 9, 2012 Report Posted February 9, 2012 Not uninformed, not confused, not waiting on PIREPS, not wondering, not skeptical, but extremely skeptical, while continuing to shill for Garmin. ROTFLMAO yet once again. Quote

danb35 Posted February 9, 2012 Report Posted February 9, 2012 FWIW, Aviation Consumer checked this out in the last couple of months; they seemed to be pretty favorably impressed by it. It does have a very limited vocabulary it needs to understand, and most of the words in it (the phonetics) were specifically chosen to sound different from each other. It's not too high on my want list, but it seems like it has strong potential. Quote
Vref Posted February 10, 2012 Author Report Posted February 10, 2012 Even with a touchscreen you may hit the wrong waypoint ...;-) Quote
BorealOne Posted February 10, 2012 Report Posted February 10, 2012 Dave Bowman: Hello, HAL. Do you read me, HAL? HAL: Affirmative, Dave. I read you. Dave Bowman: Open the pod bay doors, HAL. HAL: I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that... Quote
