Purchased new engine for my M20J and kept this magneto off old engine.  Removed 6/2021 and had less than 50 hrs on this overhauled magneto.  Magneto was rebuilt Nov 2020.  Was overhauled by Quality Aircraft Accessories.  Asking $1800.00 plus shipping

No I didn't but perhaps I should had.  The new engine required a different mag.  The old engine was a IO-360 A3B6D and the replacement is a IO-360A3B6.   The ending D designates a different mag which is better because the new mag has two independent connectors out of the engine.  I am not very technical, so I probably didn't explain correctly.

No, you made a wise decision to trade for the A3B6 and ditch the A3B6D.  You now have the option to replace one of the independent mags with a single electronic ignition and retain one of the simple mags if you wish.

I still have the A3B6D and will be installing the Electroair electronic dual replacement fairly soon.  There is only one option for the D engine currently.

Any PIREPs on the Electroair mag? I was looking at that one also for the future.

Yes, there are at least two pireps…

Probably a solid reason why there aren’t many more like the other supplier….

It Will probably take somebody with Scott’s experience to make ElectroAire work for a Mooney….

I believe the end result were returns to the vendor… one was for an Ovation in Brazil…

I've seen a couple of positive reports on Electroair's FB page... of course they could filter out any bad ones, but I believe it to be a good product and am willing to put my money behind it for my plane.  I don't know how those folks got it flying...I think they must be all-electric and have a second alternator to get it approved, but I'm not sure.  I'm not ready to go all-electric, so I still have a vacuum pump on the accessory case where eventually I want the B&C Alternator, so for my installation I'll need to dedicated backup battery that only powers the EIS.  I thought it was "finished" but I still haven't seen my order finalized, so perhaps not.

Are their other options for electric ignition on dual mag engines?

I don't understand why ElectroAire didn't get the impulse ring electronic ignition certified to work with the D mag.  Just disable the one side of the D mag with the p-lead.

I bet with an adapter, you could mount a regular mag on the D engine.

Are you going with the backup alternator or battery?

Backup battery... I still have a vacuum pump and there is not an STC backup alternator for our engines that I know of.  Eventually I'd like to add it with a panel update/all-electric.

This is great news. Last I heard, the battery wasn't approved yet... sounds like it is. Might have to give them a call to order!

The alternator, if you've removed the vacuum pump, is a field approval from a local FSDO. There are a couple of other Mooneys flying around that had this done.

Agreed... if I were able today I would pursue that route, but I'm still rockin' the vacuum pump and gyros.  I have no schedule for going all-electric but at least I can upgrade the ignition sooner rather than later.

Does anyone by chance know the shelf life of the batteries?

Which batteries are we discussing?

Main aircraft batteries like a sealed Concorde 24V for the Ovation… 6years when used for VFR flight…

The old style wet lead/acid Gill battery would only go 2years…

Capacity test them annually if flying in IMC…

everything gets one step more serious when flying in IMC…

Or are we discussing a specific battery for the electronic mag?

Referring to the backup batteries for the dual mag EIS. (IBBS-12v-3ah-CRT)

looks like they are 7 years. Per the TCW site, you can replace the cells for a few hundred dollars.

To Dsolly, do you still have that Dual mag available you pulled off your M20J ?

Welcome to MooneySpace.  On this forum, to get someone's attention, you either quote them by selecting some text and then hitting the "Quote Selection" button that pops up, or you can directly reference their screen name with the "at sign" like this @Dsolly.  In any event the offer on that mag was close to a year ago, and Dsolly's last visit to this forum was about 6 months ago, so unless he logs on again, he may not see your message.
