So far the prebuy on my ‘67F is progressing as expected, with one exception.

Compressions on hot cylinders was 74/60/76/74. Mechanic bore scoped the cylinder and found what appears to be scoring from a broken ring. Pic below.

The contract is “As is/where is” so unless there’s something really major found when he pulls the cylinder, I’ll still proceed. I still feel like it’s a decent deal.

Just hoping nothing else major is uncovered.

That's not a very deep scratch. It's hard to tell from the angle the picture was taken, but it doesn't even look like it's deeper than the cross hatch. Where did he hear the air escaping during the test: breather, exhaust, or intake? I would run it again until it's up to temperature and then retest to confirm before pulling a cylinder. Sometimes the piston ring gaps just rotate into alignment, or some carbon is under a valve face, so it's good to get consecutive checks to confirm that a problem actually exists.

Thanks all!  Talked with the owner and he already instructed the mech to pull the cylinder.  Owner wants to see if anything else is going on.  Also, I was told that the engine was run up to temp prior to compression check.  We'll see what the mech says this evening.

There are definitely better ways to follow up after a single bad compression test…

There are better ways to take pics of the cylinder surface too…

By now… the cylinder has probably been pulled…. :)

Did you find anything?

Best regards,
