Mike Busch has written one or more articles on this subject. Here is a link to one of his articles:

Here’s a link to another good article on AVweb:

Also, I own and carry one of these Cruz toolkits, and use it as much in the hangar as when traveling:

I carry a reasonable compliment of tools is a soft bag. It weighs less than 20lbs and includes aviation specific items like crows feet and safety wire pliers. I carry adel clamps, zip ties, safety wire, aluminum and electrical tape, spark plugs, spare bulbs, intake gaskets,  an assortment of common fasteners. Oh and a spare fuel sump. I once met someone who was AOG on a Saturday while on a 2 week XC tour with a wing that was pissing fuel. No amount of actuating the sump would stop it, the o-ring was toast. I also carry tubes and a qt of oil in the hat rack.

OK, question for all you that carry a bunch of tools around: How often do you have everything you need to fix something on the road?

I only ask because with a couple of hundred pounds of tools in the hangar, I often end up using most of them to get any job done.

When we took the museum DC-3 and B-25 on trips, we carried a couple of large (like 50 lb large) tool boxes and did manage to do some on-the-road maintenance -- barely.

Changed a plug out once when one got fouled (I carry a spare), fixed the alternator field wire twice, fixed some cowl fasteners.   I can't think of anything else.

Consider tools that have two functions…

The hex wrench that can remove radios from the stack….

Doubles as the pin that falls out of the door handle… and works as the handle itself!

M20C experience… :)
