Hi all,

I have an inop fuel pressure sensor which will need to be replaced. However there are some delays in procuring the right part. Is there any other way to get Fuel Pressure reading at a reasonable cost that will last me a few years until a panel upgrade can be done?

it's a 1989 J model with the original panel.

Thanks for your help.

An off the shelf gauge and sensor is gonna cost at least 400-500 bucks and then labor. You could check with some of the aircraft parts resellers that sell used or refurbished parts, someone might have one sitting on a shelf somewhere.

If you are planning a panel rebuild one thing you could consider is a JPI or similar. You have room for it on your current panel under the gear switch. Way more expensive then reasonable cost and parts might still be a problem but its an option.

Cheapest option is to find the part number you need and call some salvage/used parts suppliers. 100% give Lasar a call, Dan was really helpful when I needed an oil temp gauge and directed me to Preferred air parts which had one on the shelf and it has been working perfectly ever since.

My apologies if this is an obvious question, but have you confirmed the sensor is actually bad?

There is a known issue with the connectors between the sensor and the cockpit gauge. You can try cleaning the contacts but the recommended solution is to replace the connection.

Rick

If it is the same sensor from my 1980 M20J, I just had the factory sensor removed when installing an EIS system and it was working fine previously.  Let me know if you are interested, we can work a deal.

I am going by the conclusion of the mechanic, but I’ll mention this aspect anyhow.

Mine went bad. It wasn’t the connector as I measured the resistance between various pins and found a high resistance (it’s a Wheatstone bridge circuit).

The Mooney part was unavailable from Mooney. Kulite wouldn’t sell me one because it’s a Mooney part number. As near as I could tell, the Mooney part is a standard part with the CPC connector added. I found an equivalent part from Omega. Omega was much more helpful than Kulite. However, the Omega has a pipe thread instead of a hose fitting and no connector, so some modification was required. My maintainer signed it off as an owner produced part, but your regs might be different.

Your best option is a used working Kulite. But, if that fails, the Omega will work.

Thank you for your input PT20J. I have looked in ebay and there is one available.

In fact, they seem to be in a couple. Which made me wonder. I only need one, and why would there be 2. One fuel and one Oil maybe?

Are they the same references.

Thanks

Kulite is a sensor building company… often Ts and Ps

They show up everywhere…

Their Mooney sensors are complex and don’t last forever…

And can take several months to get a new one built…

Search for Kulite around here…

PP thoughts only…

I don’t know what your symptoms are but I have a 78 J and my fuel pressure pegged all the way to the right past red line last week on a long trip.  I took it to a shop at TTD with Mooney expertise, and of course it was working again when they looked at it, but the A&P suggested either an issue with the sender or the fuel pressure transducer is bad.  The good news is that they are cheap.  This is the unit according to the parts manual:

Available from Spruce as well.

On my 89 J model, the pressure transducer is rare piece unfortunately. It’s a different part number.
