chriscalandro Posted May 19, 2022 Report Posted May 19, 2022 Anyone ever have probing problems with probes? Am I using this section properly ?
David Lloyd Posted May 19, 2022 Report Posted May 19, 2022 Most of my probe problems have been the connection from the probe wires to the engine monitor wiring. What indications of a problem?
donkaye, MCFI Posted May 20, 2022 Report Posted May 20, 2022 I've loved the EI MVP-50 engine monitor for the many years I've owned it. However, the issues I've had with it are twofold. First, I would NEVER recommend installing the quick response probes. I had nothing but problems with them burning up. Going with the robust probes complete solved that issue. Secondly, the connection between the probes and the monitor have been problematic. I can't tell you how many times or in how many places I've had to spend money to reconnect probes that have been intermittent. Oftentimes you wouldn't know if it was the probe or the connection. Luckily, it's never been the engine. Top Gun changed the connections to a "snap on" type and that issue seems to have been resolved.

PT20J Posted May 20, 2022 Report Posted May 20, 2022 I really like the JPI EGT probes. They seem to react fast enough and mine have lasted 1200 hours and still looked good enough that I didn’t replace them when I put in the G3X/EIS. Some connection problems may be due to installation. JPI instructions call for the star washer to go between the ring terminals rather than under the nut. This allows the washer teeth to dig into the metal of both terminals for better electrical contact. Skip 2
