I've had my Foreflight for about 4 years now on an IPad Air Pro.  It has 32G of memory.  Of course I do the map/charts updates and I am now getting a message that I am almost out of space.  I am not an Apple person.  How do I delete old copies of the same maps/charts to free up memory.  I don't know how to navigate the IPad itself in settings (just don't find any way to see the actual files) and foreflight options seem to be to delete the app and start over??

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Also, when you download Foreflight updates consider eliminating the areas you might never need in flight.  Before I upgraded my FlyQ files from an iPad with minimal memory, I only downloaded a handful of states in my immediate area and any others required for a flight I might have planned.

To delete the old maps/charts etc., go to the More Menu (lower right) and then Downloads at the top of the list.

Scroll down the list and look for for any charts or other download you do not want and put your finger on it and drag that line to the LEFT.   As you do you will see DELETE (Red) appear at the end of the line.  Just tap on the Delete.

You can go through all the various drop down menus at the top of the list too.

And anything you delete you can download again later.

NOTE:  On the next iPad (whenever that is) consider more memory.  The charts and programs are just going to keep getting bigger and bigger.  And it never hurts to have extra space.

Hey Pete,

Your explanation was exactly what I was looking for, and it does just what you said it would do.  For example, Alabama is the first state in the list in each category.  I can left swipe it and get a "Delete" red box and delete it. The "file" that I think I am deleting is dated:  June 17,2021 - July 15, 2021.  What I think is that there are another 20 or 30 earlier "Alabama"  identical files with earlier dates (updates to data excluded).  In settings, it shows ForeFlight app as 28.51GB.  I think if I installed Foreflight on a new iPad it would not be anywhere close to 28GB but I don't know.

Thoughts??

Foreflight only takes 14 GB on my iPad. First thing I would check is to go to Downloads and at the top DOWNLOAD SETTINGS and make sure you are only downloading the areas you need. I am downloading 5 of 59 United States and 1 of 15 Canada.

By all means delete the older ones first and see where you are on memory.  FF should clean itself up, when the charts expire, but sometimes it doesn't.  If you have that many old expired downloads, you should gain a lot of memory back.

But I have about 28Gs with all the Sectionals, High and Low Enroute charts.  So I only see the size I'll  have on my iPad going up as FF itself gets bigger and they offer more overlays or more details in their maps.

FF shouldn’t let that happen.  It will generally delete the old version when a new one is loaded.  Do what the other guys said and carefully check through what you have selected to let FF download each cylcle.  Ie, only the states you need, probably not high charts, etc.

I'm glad it wasn't just me this update cycle. All of the sudden Foreflight went from doing the typical update well within my memory to needing 64GB+ and saying there wasn't enough space. Deleting expired (you can delete all with one click) charts solved it, but to the point above, Foreflight should be doing this on its own. We'll see how the next update cycle goes.

Not that. When Foreflight updates a state before the effective date, there will be two versions - the current and the future. But once the new date comes to pass, the old is automatically deleted.

But there can be leftovers. For example, if you don't have Mississippi as one of your selected states but check out a Mississippi airport or "Pack" for a trip there, it will download. Those don't update but they do hang around. I do a lot of "what if's" and follow YouTube flights, so I tend to have a lot of that stuff around.

Best way to get rid of leftovers is the "Delete" button at the top of the Downloads page. It will give you the choice to delete everything or just expired data. Choose expired data.

OTOH, if your memory problem is because you have selected too much, say, more states than you need, delete all and make better selections.

Well depending on when you do the update (or it can do it automatically), you’ll have two versions of all the updated charts at once.  The updates come out approximately 10 days before the old ones expire, so you can definitely have both on there which does use a lot more space.  If you wait until the update becomes valid, you can delete the old versions and update with the new.
