Xtrmedia Posted May 17, 2021 Report Posted May 17, 2021 Hello everyone. I’m a low time pilot(92hrs), looking to buy my first airplane. All my flying was in a 172/SR20 g6. I’m 6ft8 270lbs, looking to see if I can find someone willing to let me either sit in, or go on a flight in a mooney(would be happy to share cost of course). Some of the aviation mechanics I’ve met at kmlb, highly recommended this group. All help and advice is appreciated. My mission is to buy a plane that I can finish my ifr training in, as well as fly the country to work on medical equipment for my business. Quote
N201MKTurbo Posted May 17, 2021 Report Posted May 17, 2021 I have a friend who is 6' 7" he has flown in the copilot's seat many times and never complained. Quote
carusoam Posted May 18, 2021 Report Posted May 18, 2021 Welcome aboard Xtr! We have plenty of pilots with similar measurements... For cruising the USA... keep an eye on the UL... Some Mooneys have more useful load than others.... Many are near 1kLBs.... some have less, some have more.... A Mooney will be better than the other airframes for comfort... Start trying to narrow down which model Mooney is right for you... What your budget is... Would you like turbo or NA engine.... How many color screens would you like with that? Go Mooney! Best regards, -a- Quote
Oldguy Posted May 18, 2021 Report Posted May 18, 2021 @Xtrmedia you may want to talk with @Yetti about this. While he may be a little too far to get you into his plane, I believe he still has you by an inch or so in height. Not so sure on weight, but my (comparatively) diminutive 6'5" 220 lbs. fits well in my 1984 J model. And I have had all four seats full on a few flights where I did not need full tanks. Quote
Yetti Posted May 18, 2021 Report Posted May 18, 2021 You will fit fine. Of note. If the seats have been redone some people add foam. Al Mooney was 6' 3". There is a mod to drill some more holes in the seat rail. But I can fly from the last original hole. I am 6'9" The nice thing is where currently your head is up in the top of the 172 and the runway disappears when you do base to final... In a Mooney your visibility will be much better. The F has like 1100lbs useful. Much much more than a 172. seat_rail.pdf 1 Quote
Xtrmedia Posted May 19, 2021 Author Report Posted May 19, 2021 I appreciate the welcome and all the great info. @Yetti thanks for sharing that document, much appreciated. Quote
aviatoreb Posted May 19, 2021 Report Posted May 19, 2021 I thought Al was 6’5”. I had an extra hole added for comfort. Quote

carusoam Posted May 20, 2021 Report Posted May 20, 2021 @Xtrmedia... Check the message from flyboy above.... Don’t worry, we can still discuss how comfortable a Mooney is for tall people afterwards... Go MS! Best regards, -a- Quote
fantom Posted May 20, 2021 Report Posted May 20, 2021 Warning, Xtrmedia.... Flyboy will most likely put on foggles, and turn you into a safety pilot. Trust you're 'comfortable' with that. 2 Quote

carusoam Posted May 20, 2021 Report Posted May 20, 2021 Flying right seat as safety pilot is way cool! You get to see how the plane really works in real time... Best regards, -a- Quote

chriscalandro Posted July 23, 2021 Report Posted July 23, 2021 (edited) Why was my comment appealingly censored and removed? just because someone has a differing opinion, doesn’t mean it’s wrong. so again, I believe at your height and weight, getting in and out may be a challenge. While that is fine for normal operations, you need to ask yourself if it will be acceptable during an emergency egress. Edited July 23, 2021 by chriscalandro Quote
Marauder Posted July 23, 2021 Report Posted July 23, 2021 6' 3" 6' 5" Whatever it takesThe thing that people don’t realized is that Al Mooney had 44 inch arms. Who else would design a plane with a fuel selector in that area?!Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro 1 Quote

You have a lot of opinions… Nobody cares enough to delete them… If you feel somebody is following you… they probably are. Could be Al Mooney… he heard about what you said… and probably didn’t like it. For the real news… find the thread about lost data… It has something to do with computer technology… You are always welcome to post your funky opinion again… See if it sticks this time… Best regards, -a- Quote
fantom Posted July 24, 2021 Report Posted July 24, 2021 Fliers with " funky opinions"..... I'm shocked 1 Quote
