Aspen2013 Posted December 7, 2020 Report Posted December 7, 2020 (edited) The GARMIN Service Advisory 1612 REV F is very accurate on the steps to complete update (FOR WINDOWS OS) I didn't follow the SD card requirement when I first did it. You HAVE to use 2 GB SD card. I purchased them on Amazon. About $25 each. Format using the FAT 32 long method not quick. Then just follow the instructions. It updates flawlessly. Only takes 3 minutes so you don't need to hook up AUX power. This is 2008 WAAS G1000. I know it says G1000 (H). I called Garmin they said its for all of them. carusoam Posted December 7, 2020 Report Posted December 7, 2020 Seeing if @Marauder is around... Message from the / an Aspen guy (?) may be interesting to you? Best regards, -a-
BlueDun Posted December 7, 2020 Report Posted December 7, 2020 The instructions are not entirely accurate if you are downloading the .zip archive in order to put the files on the SD from a Mac. A 1GB card will work with a FAT16 format. It does not have to be a 2GB card, which would be FAT32. Agreed, it is fast and there is no need for aux power.
Aspen2013 Posted December 7, 2020 Author Report Posted December 7, 2020 (edited) You may have better knowledge of MAC. I will update my post specifying for windows. It downloaded files with no issues. Thanks for pointing that out. Edited December 7, 2020 by Aspen2013 1
buddy Posted December 7, 2020 Report Posted December 7, 2020 Yeah I tried a 4GB card and it was a no go, had to buy a 2GB from Amazon and downloaded as per the instructions know problem and about 3 minutes sounds right.
Mooney_Allegro Posted December 7, 2020 Report Posted December 7, 2020 I updated my G1000 a few weeks ago. It was frustrating, because mine wouldn't update until after Garmin came out with the second Service Bulletin and I had to order the 2GB Sandisk card from Amazon. The 16GB I bought at Target wouldn't work, even though one of the Garmin techs thought it might work and recommended it. I did have to "right click" and choose the "reformat to FAT 32" with the new 2GB card. The formatting didn't take long. The final update to the G1000 took about 3 minutes. The frustrating part was that the different Garmin reps I spoke with recommended trying different things, but none of their recommendations worked until the final SB came out.
PaulM Posted December 7, 2020 Report Posted December 7, 2020 I also had to go down to a 2GB card... worked fine with that.
Robert C. Posted December 11, 2020 Report Posted December 11, 2020 hmm, the 2GB cards I bought cannot be formatted to FAT 32...says they are "write-protected." (yes, i checked the little "lock notch" several times on both cards I bought). Brand is Wasmicro. Anyone else have problems getting a working SD card? Also, I use a 8GB card for my data logging and checklist files and to load the next standby Nav Data. that seems to work fine in the top card slot of the MFD. Has anyone had success using an 8GB card (Scandisk brand)? Robert
PaulM Posted December 11, 2020 Report Posted December 11, 2020 I've only used SanDisk branded cards (as we believe that is garmin's suppler brand). I put the software on both a 4GB and a 2GB card, but I used the 2GB card first, so I didn't test the 4GB version. If you are stuck I can fly over from NJ, Or you can come to 1N7 Blairstown for breakfast. 1
Robert C. Posted December 11, 2020 Report Posted December 11, 2020 Thanks Paul, that is helpful, I'll get a Sandisk card and try it again. Love the breakfast idea, but will wait till after vaccination
PaulM Posted December 11, 2020 Report Posted December 11, 2020 If your retry doesn't work I can mail you the 2GB card.. 1
carusoam Posted December 12, 2020 Report Posted December 12, 2020 The Power of MS is awesome... It is driven by all of the MSers. Pfizer announced the FDA approval of their vaccine about an hour ago... Let the beginning of the end of the pandemic start! Best regards, -a-

I used a 1GB SanDisk and formatted to FAT 16/32 and it worked just fine.
