I do like the look of a light colored panel.  White in my RV7.  White in the Mooney when I bought it.  Three observations:  white shows every dirty thumbprint and every imperfection while black tends to hide that stuff. Third, if you fly at night, white seems to cause more reflection on the windshield, I always had to wear a dark shirt at night in the RV or I would see the reflection the entire trip.  Still if I was having a new panel cut, it would probably be a tan color to match the leather interior.

Live on the edge...

Mooneys have a history of all black to near all white with fake Naugahyde thrown in the mix... (not even real naugas were used)...

How about some cool background art..?

Really wide screen graphic art...  made with different shades of gray...

Placards will stand out...

Reflections won’t be any worse than what the instruments will do to you already...

If completely wrong... coat again... :)

Go find the coolest pic in mom’s collection... airplane and scenery.... all scaled to fit.

Best regards,

Somebody posted about this on another thread and said that Mooney used Oyster White and Oyster Grey.

Kind of off white I guess. My worry with white is that by the time I preflight, check the oil , go under the wings to sump the tanks my hands will be dirty. And by the time is get to my destination the panel will be trashed. It is sort of like wearing a white shirt and tie when you eat spaghetti and meatballs.  White shows everything- black especially flat black hides a lot of sins. Black is great from that point of view but makes the panel look dated. With an all new panel I want to make it look panel structure look modern. Thank you for your comments.

The back ground art is a cool idea. I have seen that on hot rods. Thanks for your suggestion.

Carbon fiber... real or a vinyl wrap. 3M Di NOC will pass for real prepreg CF. Matte finish so no reflections comes in colors too.

A darkish grey with white legends would be me my choice.  It goes with any interior, looks good day or night, and isn’t as commonplace as basic black.

I currently have three different colors in my "Frankenstein" panel. On the left is what it was when I got the plane. In the top of the stack and the right side is the "get it close" color of the paint I bought when I had removed stuff and cut some temporary pieces to fill the blanks. On the right where the breakers are is the dark gray which I think I will use on the whole panel after I have an AP installed and have a new panel cut to flush mount the G5's and EDM900. Of all the colors I think I like the dark gray, perhaps just a shade lighter than what is currently there.

The background color is definitely important... a nice NYC landscape with a Mooney reflecting off the freedom tower would be sweeeet... (real MSer art, posted just the other day...)

The color screen count is important... and Richard’s pic above is scoring a huge eight!

For Steven to come close... we have to start counting color surface area!

For strong total color surface area... find the guys with the pair of Dynons....

:)

Panel porn...as requested.

Steven, can you please share what color code / name your panel is?

I thought I had the market cornered on frankenstein panels.  I'm in the same boat.  Want to do one in an off white when I get my AP and engine monitor decisions made.

I have some powder from the powder coating left over if you want the name.  Matches the lighter color of the 2-tone seats and sidewalls.  The contrast between the light panel and black instruments is nice.  More modern looking.  It stays relatively clean, but I keep the plane very clean regularly.

That looks nice, John.  I'm a little surprised that you still have the STEC.  I figured you would have stepped into the garmin AP.

The STEC works, is paid for, and I get to avoid tearing the airplane apart.

That's where I'm stuck.  Since I'm planning to redo my panel, I'm kinda frozen with decisions.  Your plane is really top notch.

Yes, please. It seems a little too light for my taste, but "data is beautiful" so the more of it, the better! Thank you!
