allPrimes Posted August 28, 2020 Report Posted August 28, 2020 Hey there! I'm a student pilot looking beyond finishing my PPL and at the very, very beginning of considering buying a plane. (My gf is encouraging me, which is either very bad or very good.) A Mooney M20J seems to check all of the boxes--on paper, at least--but I'd love to start sitting in planes to start getting a feel for how they'd fit. As a result, I'm reaching out here to see if there are any active MooneySpace.com users that are in the Bozeman, MT area (or anywhere in SW Montana, really). I hadn't ever seen one on the ramp at KBZN until today. Snagged the tail number to see who it might be (to reach out), discovered that they're from MD but that the flight(s) that took them from east coast to KBZN are along the same lines as the kind of longer flights my gf and I would like to do. Another real-life check mark on the paper for the M20J... Thanks for your time!
allPrimes Posted August 28, 2020 Author Report Posted August 28, 2020 Somehow, I completely spaced and missed this thread: https://mooneyspace.com/topic/22512-mooneyspace-member-map/
Hank Posted August 29, 2020 Report Posted August 29, 2020 I flew my M20-C from WV to Cody, WY and back. Great flight! We stopped a lot for ground sightseeing, and had 3 vacations: 3 days westbound; 5 days in the Park; 3 days eastbound. Saw Mt. Rushmore; drove part of Rt. 66 in Illinois; flew by Devil's Tower; agreed that driving through the Badlands in summer would be not fun. All Mooneys are great traveling machines! I hit 200 hours total time on that trip . . . .

The catch is that my plane is with Garmin right now and won't be back until early October.
carusoam Posted August 29, 2020 Report Posted August 29, 2020 Mathematician? AP, You are very forward thinking in your approach! Good to discuss flying prior to marriage/long term relationship.... Some people haven’t been so forward thinking.... Go Mooney! Best regards, -a- 1

Your timeline doesn't seem to be a catch to me. Given that I, essentially, have an infinite amount of time in which to shop around for a personal plane, the timeline of October is just fine. I'll reach out directly via direct message.

I have to admit, it was the gf who gave me the final push into flying! She knew I had wanted to do it for a long time then gave me the small push I needed. I keep telling her that it's all her fault! 1
carusoam Posted August 29, 2020 Report Posted August 29, 2020 You are in a perfect position to get a proper tail number before you purchase your plane... Changing tail numbers afterwards gets exponentially more expensive... Find Erik, and his pi-plane... N314EB or something like that... he is a math guru as well.... And he recently got his awesome plane painted... Imagine when two people are on the same page spending the budget on airplane related things... the sky is or isn’t the limit..? Best regards, -a-

Hey a stats guy who likes prime numbers - you are a-ok in my book! So my son and I flew to KBZN about 2 (or was it 3?) years ago. From KPTD. Here's a few pictures to prove it - there were some WWII war birds there too. It's really really pretty there! We did some fly fishing. I did the flying and he did the fishing. thinwing Posted September 1, 2020 Report Posted September 1, 2020 just a couple of mooniacs headed for Seeley Lake!
allPrimes Posted September 2, 2020 Author Report Posted September 2, 2020 Heard someone flying a Mooney yesterday make a radio call into KBZN while I was doing some pattern work. Ended up seeing an orange Mooney over at the local FBO. Looked sharp but I did not get the chance to get the tail number. I'll be in Polson this weekend, just over the hill from Seeley! Enjoy! Seeley is gorgeous.
