tim417 Posted April 5, 2022 Report Posted April 5, 2022 @wingslevel One more question: what was the part number of the shafts you ordered from Mooney? Wondering if I can do the same thing as I was able to source a set of yokes without shafts.

Wondering if I can do the same thing as I was able to source a set of yokes without shafts. These are the part numbers for the control wheel shafts from the retrofit kit for my aircraft. Be aware, the lead time was several months for mine. You can also call and confirm with Lasar the part number. They deal with the complete kit. 710072-507 710072-508 These shafts part numbers are specific to my year and Model Mooney. Not sure the year and model you have but make sure these are compatible. The new shafts will be about 2 inches longer, so the yokes will be a little more toward your chest than what you have now, but I got used to it. It was well worth it to me.
tim417 Posted April 5, 2022 Report Posted April 5, 2022 Ah, if I extrapolate the part numbers, the 710072-501 should be what I need since my S/N is 2518. I am not in a huge hurry so a few months wait is fine, but I am sitting down to find out how much they charge to make them…
carusoam Posted April 6, 2022 Report Posted April 6, 2022 This is one of the nicest upgrades… It gets used every flight… It contacts your hands the whole time… It is unfortunately expensive…. So…. Make sure you have the exact part numbers you want… The wrong ones can be very disappointing… Best regards, -a-
tim417 Posted April 6, 2022 Report Posted April 6, 2022 Agreed. I figured I am touching the control wheel every time I fly, so this will be a worthwhile upgrade. I think I found the applicable part numbers for the shafts and yoke. Not sure what that extra linkage piece that @Skates97 had on his logbook entry is, but I have my eye on it.

Let me see if this helps. Here is the log entry, in bold are the numbers that correspond to the picture from the M20R parts manual, illustration below. "Replaced control wheels, shafts and yoke control tube assemblies with PN LH Control Wheel Shaft - 710064-509 (#5), RH Control Wheel Shaft - 710064-510 (#5). Yoke Assembly - 710065-503 (#2), Control Tube Assembly - (2x) - 710083-501 (#11). Verified no binding or rubbing on any pieces throughout full range of motion. Wired push-to-talk switches on both control wheels and verified proper operation." For reference here is the illustration from the M20D parts catalog, it is a little easier to see how it all goes together. I think the one you have a question about is #11 in the M20R catalog, #9 in the M20D catalog. I don't think that you have to replace it, but I had the new pieces so went ahead and replaced them. I figure they are 30 years newer than the ones that were in my plane so I might as well replace them as leave them sitting on the shelf.
jezzie Posted April 7, 2022 Report Posted April 7, 2022 Just in case you are considering a complete changeover. I have these parts from a 78J serial #24-0458. 710065-501A yoke assembly 4 - sets of 77-78 control yokes and shafts 2 different styles Block control tube guides One set of control yokes were beaded and powder coated the other set is in good condition let me know if I can help
carusoam Posted April 7, 2022 Report Posted April 7, 2022 @tim417 See what Jezzie has for pics! When he first came to MS he was rebuilding his Mooney from the inside out…. One of the important details…. Is at the far end of the shaft… a 90° change at the connecting point may require changing another piece, the other half of the connection… Best regards, -a-

tim417 Posted April 8, 2022 Report Posted April 8, 2022 Someone got the wheels and shafts from @jezzie ahead of me (as I only needed the shafts). Thank you @wings_level for confirming the part numbers for your application. that helps a lot. If anyone has shafts for a 77-78 J model for sale, esp part numbers below, please let me know 710072-501 710072-502 Thank you!
tim417 Posted April 19, 2022 Report Posted April 19, 2022 I just wanted to hop on and thank everyone for their help. I got really lucky and was able to find a pair of control wheels with shafts that will work with my 63 C model. They are the same part numbers as @wings_level got from the factory. It didn’t break the bank so I will be contacting Hector hopefully tomorrow to schedule a leather wrap. I appreciate everyone on this thread and this forum. It is a fantastic source of knowledge and a gathering of good people willing to help out their fellow Mooniac. 1
