Tahir,

Getting a voltmeter at the store seems to be the bigger challenge lately...

If you can measure the voltage at the socket... you can use the LEDs like everyone else...

If something has changed a wire or two in your plane... you may get the odd effect of the LEDs not working as expected.

Don’t feel bad if you don’t already have a multimeter... or maintain the electrical system in your Auto...

By the time you acquire all the tools... replacing the old bulb with another is an acceptable practice that works pretty well...

Once you have a multimeter... you might start experimenting with things around the house... :)

Is that 110v or 120? Does the oven use 240v or 208, 3PH...?

How does this dimmer work?

Really fun skills to have, just not required...

Pp thoughts only, not a mechanic...

Best regards,

-a-

My guess is you have polarity reversed. Incandescents (OEM) don't care, but LEDs (unless they have a polarity sensing circuit) do.

Well, the Specifications section on the page for the bulbs says they are NOT polarity sensitive, so I guess they auto-adjust to whatever is fed to them.  But a good call!

So I should buy incandescents instead of LED bulbs?

You just need the 'right' LEDs. Do your incandescents work? I guess I am asking if you are sure you have ship voltage to the sockets.

Another day...another thing I learned. Looks like i will be getting a voltmeter to check and see if there's any power coming through the sockets.

I'm gonna get a voltmeter and see if there is any power coming through. I will update you guys when I find out!

If the lectricity is there is the center the hot wire or cold... :)

The fun part about LEDs...

They emit light...

The other fun thing...

They are diodes...

Diodes only allow the flow of electrons in one direction...

Wire them correctly they allow electrons to pass...

Wire them backwards... can be problematic...

Often, diodes fail briefly after being wired in reverse... they get hot and let the smoke out...

Incandescent bulbs don’t care if they are wire in reverse polarity...

PP thoughts only, not a lectrician.... :)

The most quirky part of that circuit is the dimmer. It can fail entirely on, entirely off, be “jumpy” or erratic, or anywhere in between.so be sure to exercise it fully throughout its range to see if that has any effect on your LED (Light Emitting Diode).

(PP opinion only, with the distinct disadvantage of also being an EE)

Purchased these ones and they unfortunately did not work. I tried both bulbs, Master switch was on. Moved the dimmer switch in all directions. I tried everything to see if I could get them to work but they didn't. I don't know if it's an issue with the airplane or the type of bulb.

Going to revive an old thread just to post an update. I had dropped the issue as I didn't have much time to figure it out. Turns out.... one of the circuit breakers was popped that was behind the CB cover on my front, right side panel.Who would have thought. Popped in the LED bulbs that I had purchased and they worked! The dimmer switch also works which is really neat. I'm missing a torpedo light for the right side, however, both light bulbs work. The only issue I now have is that the left dimmer switch controls the power and dimming for both left and right lights. It's okay though. I officially have light in the cockpit! Thanks to everyone for all the help as always.

Link to the bulbs I purchased thanks to Oscar Avalle:

Hi @Tahir K - when you say the left dimmer switch controls lights for both sides of the panels, are you talking about the rotary dimmer over your head?  We've also got a '66 E and one of those controls the panel lighting while the other controls the overhead red torpedo lights.  If you've got something different, ignore everything I said...  :-)

Yup that's the one I'm talking about! The left dimmer knob somehow controls both the torpedos and the panel lighting at the same time. The right knob doesn't change anything.

Oh, that's odd.  So you can't have your panel lights on without also having the torpedo lights on?  It almost sounds like one of those rheostat switches failed so someone just wired both the panel and the torpedos to the working one.  That would be an expedient field repair, but that's not how mine is set up.  On a side note...I did my transition training during the day, so when I first flew at night I thought my panel lights weren't working.  It took me a month to figure out that the overhead dimmer controlled the panel.  Duh...

I really felt that "duh" moment when I found out about the circuit breaker. How I made it all the way through my commercial multi license is shocking right now considering I didn't even bother to check the circuit breakers. Anyways, as long as I have some sort of light in the cockpit, I'll take it.

Just don’t replace your compass bulb with an LED....At least the one I used made it so dark I couldn’t read it!

The LED emits light forward only, and the incandescent emits light in all directions... the compass is illuminated by a hole in the side of the tube where the bulb slides in- so it needs a  Bulb that can emit 90 degree Beam. Did anyone else have this problem?
