The LH strobe is out, can anyone confirm that this is part #A625 light assy strobe lh/rh 14v? it is for a 83'J & recomendations for where to buy? thanks.

yes, I believe so,the screws for the assembly are located behind it when you pull it out. I know you cannot just change the bulb, the whole assembly has to be changed.

My '77 has a similar system (Hoskins) that is out-of-production.  When I lost a bulb a couple years ago, Don Maxwell was able to put in a newer bulb (can't remember the manufacturer right now, though) and modify the harness to connect to my existing and still functional Hoskins power supplies in the wings.

I would investigate the modern LED systems and see if any of those are PMA'd yet to replace the vintage strobes.  I believe the LED ones don't require the heavy and expensive power supplies, so there could be some weight-savings to be had as well as improved reliability.

At OSH the only PMA'd wingtip strobe was a Whelen unit that cost 1200$....per wingtip.  It looked like something off a Citation. It may be a while before we see some reasonable options there.

I am working with Aveo on this problem right now.  Here is the email I received from them today:

Hi, David!

I just rattled the engineering cage this morning on this potential project, via our VP of Sales in Europe. If anyone can smell a potential new product with a market, he can!

Many countries go on vacation for the month of August, so I'm surprised that I haven't heard anything in that time. But now that it's September, my bet is that I'll get a response shortly.

I hope Aveo Engineering can finally get the Galactica series (TSO'ed) in series production. For more information, look here:

They have been touting the certified lights for a year, make lots of uncertified lights for LSAs and Experimentals, but my guess is that they are finding that there is a reason so few manufacturers make TSO'ed or PMA'ed stuff....the regulatory burden is a mite high.

We are planning to install a pair of "Ultra Embedded" Galactica lights in the tips, and a "PosiStrobe CP" in the tail of our J, and will have a complete working Hoskins system for sale when that happens.

Just went through the strobe issue with my flat wing Mooney 201J (1980).

I had Hoskins power supplies in each wing near the wing tip installed at the factory. If the power supplies are bad, Whelen STC (with a FAA 337) is required. The power supplies are approx $250 (aircraft spruce) each and are a little larger than the Hoskins. Installing the Whelen power supplies on the larger inspection panel adjacent to the small one the Hoskins fit on top seems to be the smarter solution. The LEDs Navs (with strobes) run approximately 300 each and require field approval for M20Js and newer. Older models have STC. I called my FSDO and pre-negotiated the 337 language and performed the install of the lights according to the Whelen Anti-collision light guide. If you retain the Hoskins lights with the Whelen Power supplies, you will have to switch the black and white wires coming out of the power supply. Read all applicable parts of the Whelen install manual.

Plan on 8 hours labor for the entire job and call the FSDO for their approval process prior to starting the work.

Its nice, I leave the LEDs on all the time - visible in daylight too.

probably easier to answer with a picture of what you currently have. part number change with serial number rather than vintage year ( like it is for cars)

an aircraft serial number can help too although it is never simple, especially if the item has been modified.
