I think it falls into the category of it's easier to beg forgiveness than ask permission.   I might have done the same thing but probably wouldn't have told anyone about it.

There is a plan in the works to take it somewhere to have it done.

I think I paid $7500.00 for 2-32 gallon tanks.   I sold the plane a year later.   They were good when I sold it.
