carusoam Posted November 9, 2022 Report Posted November 9, 2022 Very complex question Will…. Each alternator has different output that is rpm dependent…. There are charts to show what their output would be… volts, amps, rpm… And…. That is as individual systems… When simultaneously trying to fill the same electron bucket… things may get interesting… In this case, the bucket is empty… expect both VRs are going to send maximum current to try to fill the bucket as quickly as practical…. The VRs get one field voltage signal and operate on what is sensed on that wire… I don’t think there is a computer doing the analysis to decide to take it easy and split up the work over time… PP guesses only… Lets invite @kortopates to the discussion… His K may have a dual alternator system…. larryb Posted November 9, 2022 Report Posted November 9, 2022 I jumped my dead dead Mooney battery (cabin lights) and after removal of plug, with engine running, the battery did charge. However the battery was still dead, would not hold a charge, and needed replacement. This was on my J model with single battery and alternator. Quote
carusoam Posted November 9, 2022 Report Posted November 9, 2022 Larry, Battery polling… Concorde or Gill, how many years on the battery? Best regards, -a- Quote
larryb Posted November 9, 2022 Report Posted November 9, 2022 I don’t recall, probably Concorde. It happened soon after I bought the plane and it was the battery that came with it. I didn’t check the logs to see how old it was. I put in a Concorde and removed the cabin light fuse. 1 Quote
kortopates Posted November 9, 2022 Report Posted November 9, 2022 So if you have dual alternators do they share the load charging a drained battery thus less demand and wear on each? Or does one take the majority of the load? I notice at idle my belt driven alternator outputs a charge where as the engine mounted one does not until i get the rpm’s above 1000. The belt driven alternator, #2, will always take the majority of the load because it’s turning faster than the engine driven alternator. That said, each alternator has its own independent VR and although they’re intended to be set exactly the same there is always some difference and as a result there is some variation from airframe to airframe. Yet it’s makes no difference to the charging system how the load is divided. As Anthony said there is no component to control sharing the load unlike most twins that do have a circuit to balance them.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 1 Quote
