I flew most of my career in the LA Basin, ORD, JFK and now transit PHX quite a bit. As I mentioned before, you'll find after a while that the fish finder is more of a distraction than an asset, just like TCAS was and turned out to be. It was "fun'  to see all the traffic but then you realize the vast majority are not and never were a threat so you become complacent with the technology. The perception of help is vastly overstated for traffic but the weather in could turn out to be quite valuable.

All that heads down stuff looking at TV screens should be redirected at looking out the windows, This has been a problem since the introduction of FMCs and the 757

Goggle up "Children of the Magenta Line" on utube.

Planes are just damn hard to see and I have 20/20.  I've had atleast 3 very close calls in the last 2 mos, I'm thankful for any help I can get.   Couple weeks back, had a phenom or Pilatus going to "Converge" with my position, neither of us could see the other.  I think it was "converge" , atc and I were both a bit frazzled.  I calmed, looked at the adsb, turned to the right  about 30 seconds later the Jet passed just off to my left and about 200 feet above me.

There will always be people who don't use useful technology efficiently.   Can't get around that as long as the meatware is manipulating the controls.   On the other hand, most can learn to use it to be able to find and track traffic more efficiently, even visually, or especially visually.   One thing the displays will teach is how bad your eyeballs are at spotting all the traffic, even when you know just where to look.

I don't want to fly in busy regions without it.   Even in BFE it can show you traffic you wouldn't know is there otherwise, and traffic approaching from behind you or below you might not ever have a chance of seeing otherwise.

If it makes you look out the window less you're doing it wrong, imho.

This just in: https://download.aopa.org/advocacy/190913_AOPA-FAA_ADS-B_Out_Letter.pdf (Spoiler alert: Status quo, clock is ticking.)

But how could this be? People on the internet were saying it would be extended because people procrastinated too long and shops are booked up! Surely the FAA must know that several years is not enough time for compliance.

Or or are people on the internet wrong?

It doesn’t matter they could give us 20 years most CB’s will procrastinate and have the shops booked near the deadline. Hopefully the FAA will enforce noncompliance to the fullest extent possible. Even if one tragedy to saved to ADSB it’s worth the cost.

The problem is that the hardware is back ordered and shops are booked through 2020.

I doubt you'll find anyone who actually said that. A bit of a straw man.

I'm a CB and I had it done 2 years ago :)

I have a friend that ordered an esg late last week. It showed up today with a custom harness. He’s having it installed Wed.

If you have in fact been on a waiting list for adsb device install for over a year I’d get a new shop. Especially if the device you asked them to install hasn’t been ordered yet and is back ordered.

What device exactly is it that you are installing that is back ordered?  There isn’t a Appero, L5, or Garmin backlog that I’m aware of, I see people getting sky beacon every day(but I’m not sold on the lightbulb solutions)

Shop ordered 12 of the Garmin new 355 navigators and were allocated 1. Hoping they’ll get me in in November. I’ve been on their waiting list since January.

Baloney.  Folks said all kinds of things while I went through my patch of perdition to get set up.  Lots were waiting because they thought the price would come down.  Other than the hang off your wing widgets, it hasn't.  Other folks said the FAA would cave on the deadline.  Still possible, but I have strong doubts.  I really don't think the FAA cares about our little woes.  They care about the woes of those who can buy Congressmen.

Like I said, the writing has been on the wall for years.  Products have been available for years.  I feel sorry for exactly no-one.

Yeah, the 355 and 375 are new and with more demand than supply, but the mainstream transponders appear to be readily available.  The 355/375 appear to be something worth the wait.

I strongly disagree with that. The Garmin 375 has totally changed the game in my opinion. You get a WAAS GPS navigator for much less than previous but also get the ADS-B and transponder for free in the deal. If you'd  bought an ADS-B solution last year you'd be checking eBay to see what you could get for it, as I'm sure many have.
