Can’t remember if your Garmin are waas units...

If they are...

With your used 330 worth $400 ish and used 330es units selling for $1800 ish the exchange or upgrade will be the same price as the 82. The wiring will be similar and you won’t need to mount/splice in the 82.

Even if they’re not...

I’d still upgrade the to the 330es and upgrade at least one of the Garmin units to waas. The 82 requires the proper waas antenna and wiring so you might as do it right.

One thing to keep in mind I’m not sure your current antenna mounts are legal being so close to each other.  They are also in a very unusual position probably because the installer didn’t want to remove any of the interior.  You will need to check with installers if the antenna (at least one) needs to be relocated.

I thought those GPS antenna’s were wonky.  So if we upgrade or exchange the existing 330 to ES it is compliant without GDL82?  That is better price wise too.  Thanks.  Will likely be “awhile” before 530 gets updated to WAAS.  Will cross the antenna bridge at that juncture.  Thanks for the information.  MUCH appreciated.

The 330ES requires a WAAS GPS source to be compliant, so for you without a WAAS GPS it wont meet the requirement.  The GDL 82 has a built in WAAS receiver.

Just read up on that so that is a dealbreaker as we are not going to do the Waas upgrade to 430 or 530 for awhile.  Looks like it is the GDL 82 at annual.

You’ll probably want to do the TailBeacon because the 82 will require an additional antenna (waas) which is extra expense/more holes in the plane.

Was looking at the tailbeacon but ended up doing GDL-82's in both the M20E and Cessna 172. Get the Wiring Harness, it makes it easier, you will also need new coax if you have the older RG-58(?).

No, I don’t think so.  The GDL82 is certified now.  TailBeacon is in limbo.  I am to close to 2020 mandate date and hanger in Class C.  My mechanic has installed these.  Price point is acceptable.  Thanks for the option though.

I saw a bunch of people on ACS in customer comments discussing the value of the wiring harness.  Agree 100% and nice to get validation from a Mooney installed unit.

10ft is too short for the Mooney but was was too long on the Cessna, what was cut from the Cessna was spliced to the Mooney's which made it plenty long enough and kept the wiring labels. Both were installed with the anonymous switch and the fail light, we also added its own circuit breaker, although you can wire it to the transponders. There is an Install Manual on Garmin's site for the Mooneys.

If I have a Garmin 330 transponder in a new to me plane why would I not install the GDL 82?  I don’t ever plan to leave US with plane OR fly above 18k feet...

I do plan to fly outside the US.  No choice really.  UAvionix tail beacon covers both the sky (for the space-based systems) and the US ground-based system.

O.K. Did some checking.  Absolutely correct that GDL 82 is a no go with the 330.  We have decided to upgrade to ES and install Wass on the 530.  $6500 plus antenna and r32 from upgraded 330 ES into the 530.

Thanks for the information everyone.
