Just did my first oil change in Sept and used Form a Funnel under the filter and had no spills. 

But a newbie question about the filter, sounds like oil flows from the center through the media, is that correct?  If so, any metal/FOD should be trapped in the inner filter media?

I opened my filter to inspect and inside was nice and clean but then I started to worry seeing some small slivers on the outside part of the media. After thinking, I chalked it up to flakes coming off when I cut into the can but wanted to make sure.

Really, I have always found the crud on the outside of the filter.

Correct, the oil enters the outer side of the filter (between the can and pleats) , passes through the media and exits from the inside of the filter.   Any trapped contaminants will be in the pleats on the outside.   When the can is pressurized the oil is forced (filtered) through the pleats and exits from the center of the filter back into the engine.  This process is the same as a running engine.  Therefore, if there are any debris from the tool piecing the can it will be filtered out.

It seems like it would still leave a lot of oil in the filter. It can only push it out until the oil is below the center port, then it will just blow air through system. At least with a horizontal filter.

If I leave it overnight almost all the oil will drain out. To do that some must be draining out from the outer area of the filter which means it is back flowing through the oil pump.

Sorry, I wasn't clear about how I said that, I meant the debris is on the opposite side of the media from where the oil flows into the engine.  You are correct about the crud being on the outside of the filter.

I was skeptical as well.  My filter is horizontal.  No mess and no waiting.   The only place I can have a drop or two get away  from  me is the accessory case after I remove the filter.  I need to remember to wipe off any residual or I'll get one or two drops.    No buyers remorse!

 It to tired of the mess so I installed a remote oil filter.
