mcolond Posted April 8, 2009 Report Posted April 8, 2009 The Mission: non-stop 670 nM trip in 4 hrs or less The need: 500 pounds for bags and passegers (after fuel) The question: Is this doable on a TLS? How about any other turbo Mooney? Thanks for your help Quote

The-sky-captain Posted April 8, 2009 Report Posted April 8, 2009 Just got in from S. Dakota today. 604 miles in 3:45 with two people and bags at 9500 ft. I flew around Mt. Rushmore last night about 1500 agl and it looked pretty sweet from that perspective. Quote
mcolond Posted April 8, 2009 Author Report Posted April 8, 2009 Quote: JimR In my 201 with no wind and at my normal ROP power settings, I could cover 630 nm in four hours with minimal VFR reserves and approximately a 650 pound payload. Covering that extra 40 nm in four hours would require 10 knots more airspeed than I usually get, which would necesitate a lower altitude and thereby higher power setting. With 150 pounds of fuel to spare, however, I suspect that it would be possible for me to pick up those extra knots, but not practical. There are faster (ie aerodynamically cleaner) 201s than mine out there, though. Interesting hypothetical. Quote
mcolond Posted April 8, 2009 Author Report Posted April 8, 2009 Quote: JimR Here are the M20M's statistics according to MAPA's Trey Hughes. I agree with N233KT. According to these numbers, this mission should be well within the M20M's performance capabilities. Of course, the caveat is the key. Most airplanes that I have flown are heavier and end up burning more fuel and going slower than the books says that they should. mooniac58 Posted April 8, 2009 Report Posted April 8, 2009 Quote: JimR Agreed!!! Indeed. People look at me like I am lying when I tell them my typical flight outlining speed/time aloft, distance covered and fuel consumed. I was just talking to a Part 135 Caravan driver today who was admiring my 201 while I was shoving it in the hangar and he had to ask me these things like three times just to make sure I wasn't confused. mcolond Posted April 9, 2009 Author Report Posted April 9, 2009 Quote: Parker_Woodruff Let me recommend the M20K, more precisely the M20K Encore from the mid-late 1990s. You'll be set on your useful load and you'll have a heck of a lot less in engine operation costs. You can get FIKI TKS on it. Also the M20K 252 from the late 1980s can have a FIKI TKS system. Quote
TurboExec Posted April 9, 2009 Report Posted April 9, 2009 I'd agree with parker....although these days the TLS cost just about the same as a good 252, and you get a long body to boot! Quote
KSMooniac Posted April 9, 2009 Report Posted April 9, 2009 Not many Encores on the market at any given time. I see two on ASO: http://www.aso.com/aircraft/120093/ Known Ice http://www.aso.com/aircraft/122206/ No Ice http://www.aso.com/aircraft/123064/ Known Ice Ovation perhaps? They take trades, too. Quote
