The strap is an interesting idea for the nose wheel. I've done mine multiple times, no special tools or strap are needed on the mains. Don't even need to remove tires/wheels. Just put the aircraft on jacks and use the jacks to lower just enough weight on the mains till you can access the bolt and nut that goes through the collar. Then remove the nut and washer on collar bolt, push the collar bolt through the access hole you'll find and grab its washer. With the bolt and its hardware off, just jack the aircraft up till the top of the shock link tower falls out of the bottom of the gear exposing the disk. The nose though does require compressing beyond the weight of the aircraft on it; so the strap sounds interesting.

If you just replace the disks its very quick and easy. But there is really more to it than that. You really need to inspect the interior base of the shock link tower/tube. It typically collects moisture and with no where to drain, it rusts at the bottom. It it's been many years  with significant corrosion there is a very good chance they really needs to be changed out (10% of wall thickness). LASAR sells their PMA'd version for $500 (significantly cheaper than from Mooney) and you may also need their PMA'd bearing they attach with for another ~$70.  But at the least, the shock link tube should be cleaned up to verify corrosion hasn't exceeded 10% of tube thickness, repainted and treated with something like ACF-50 to help protect them. I spray some in the top at every annual since the links aren't cheap. Anyway, that's just how I do it.
