M20FanJesse Posted July 17, 2017 Report Posted July 17, 2017 Went to a fly in this weekend! New Cuyama (L88) is a small town in the middle of nowhere at the bottom of the central valley in California. The town was created for the nearby oil refinery back in the 60s. Hardly anything there, but they did have a 4,000ft runway for the refinery aircraft. Today, it is a private runway that is open to the public. No facilities or weather reporting, and because the government doesn't keep it up, weeds will grow if you let them. So a few weeks ago several pilots from Camarillo went up to clear out the weeds from the runway which were growing up to 4 feet tall! With the runway cleared, we scheduled a fly-in for this last weekend. The nearby buckhorn diner is amazing and we stayed at the motel that was recently renovated. 7 planes showed up, sadly not a single mooney! flew in with a guy named Mark who built his own Lancair ES. Lots of fun. Can't wait to do more. I'm no event organizer, but maybe a future mooney fly in can be held here! 1 Quote
M20FanJesse Posted July 17, 2017 Author Report Posted July 17, 2017 Just now, MooneyMitch said: Bravo for your efforts! Thanks! It was well worth the effort, and the band that played at the restaurant Saturnday evening was incredible. I noticed you're from Pismo! A guy named Bob came from Pismo who flies his '59 210 out of Oceano, maybe you know him! Quote

mooneygirl Posted July 18, 2017 Report Posted July 18, 2017 The last time I was in there, I checked out the "Cabins" on the field that they are renting out. Did you see those? I thought $100 per night was a bit steep for being sort of smack dab in the middle of nowhere. They sleep 4 but still... 1 Quote

Yes we did, but we opted to sleep in the newly renovated motel that is a part of the buckhorn diner. We got a deal sleeping there for $60/night because we called ahead and bought out the whole place. Yeah those wooden mobile cabin things look fun, but if you like a little more comfort, the motel is super nice. I think the regular rate is like $110 or something? Im sure if you call ahead you can get a group buy discount like we did. 1 Quote
