flyboy0681 Posted February 20, 2011 Report Posted February 20, 2011 Has anyone been privy to this forthcoming announcement from Garmin? I am within days of having a 430w installed and am wondering if I should wait one month. http://sites.garmin.com/magic/# Quote
LFOD Posted February 20, 2011 Report Posted February 20, 2011 I would wait. If it is a panel mount, you will be able to get a hell of a deal on that 430 you are looking to install. Quote
richardheitzman Posted February 20, 2011 Report Posted February 20, 2011 I'd buy AmSafe Seatbelts before a Garmin. Sorry couldn't help but plug my product. Still in development for the M20J and the rest of the M20K's. Earlier models are next. Quote
Mcstealth Posted February 20, 2011 Report Posted February 20, 2011 Good luck Richard. yes I would wait. Unless you will be down reqardless of the time table. Quote
KSMooniac Posted February 21, 2011 Report Posted February 21, 2011 I concur with waiting if at all possible...they've been overdue for that new product IMO for a while (and I know they have been working on the next family!) and that is also getting close to Sun 'n Fun when you might get even more discounts... PTK Posted February 21, 2011 Report Posted February 21, 2011 What are they announcing? Does anybody know? Quote
Parker_Woodruff Posted February 21, 2011 Report Posted February 21, 2011 GPS built into a G500/G600 would be phenomenal, though I'm trying to think of the ramifications of that. Could be too much for not enough screen space. Or some ability to manipulate the GPS from the G500 is something I really hoped for. We can look up airports and other NAV info from the G500, including the current flight plan in a GNS430/530, why can't we punch Direct To or something like that after highlighting a waypoint? But I'm guessing it'll have airways. Quote
flyboy0681 Posted February 21, 2011 Author Report Posted February 21, 2011 I notified my avionics shop (Sarasota) that I am delaying the upgrade until the announcement. Chances are Garmin will give discounts to early installs of the unit or existing 430's. It Although I have absolutely no details (and neither does Sarasota, one of Garmin's largest dealers on the planet), I'm figuring the new unit(s) will be like the new King 770's, integrated GPS and MFD. How much it will break the bank is yet to be determined. Quote
roundout Posted February 21, 2011 Report Posted February 21, 2011 It's about time they update this product. The technology is 20 years old. No Victor airways and no holds - come on, guys. Quote
jlunseth Posted February 21, 2011 Report Posted February 21, 2011 Well, the newest 430W does missed holds, and also does the racetrack at the beginning of an RNAV approach, but you are right, you can't just pick a point in space and have it fly a hold there by itself. But Victor airways are pretty much pointless, at least in my part of the country (west of the Miss.). I have not flown a Victor airway ever, except in training. I either get a "direct to," 90% of the time, or a series of waypoints which have nothing to do with Victor airways. Maybe they assign alot of them out East, I don't know. But I flew to Buffalo and Niagara Falls last year and never got a Victor airway either. I think if you file /G they know not to bother you with Victor airways. Quote
OR75 Posted February 21, 2011 Report Posted February 21, 2011 Personally, as an aircraft owner, I would prefer to see more progress in powerplants rather than in avionics. There are enough avionics toys for everyone's navigation needs (and budget ??? we can always argue about that one !!!!). Further down the road and awhen it is required, what I want is an intergrated GPS/ADS-B box. Just my 2 cents Quote

fantom Posted February 21, 2011 Report Posted February 21, 2011 Actually, I like to think the topic is just evolving :-) Quote
flyboy0681 Posted February 21, 2011 Author Report Posted February 21, 2011 Yea, but before you know it we'll be talking about climate change and its effect on ambient manifold pressure. Quote
Parker_Woodruff Posted February 22, 2011 Report Posted February 22, 2011 Quote: rbridges I'd love to see powerplants become less expensive. It's stunning how much aircraft engines cost vs. their automotive counterparts. Quote
Comatose Posted February 22, 2011 Report Posted February 22, 2011 Volume: it is amazing how much cheaper you can make an engine when you have a billion dollars to develop it (from a similar engine) and fully intend to sell ten million of them over the course of its design life. Back to the garmin, though, I hope it is more GNS480 and less GNS430. The Apollo stuff is SO much better to use. Quote
mooniac58 Posted February 22, 2011 Report Posted February 22, 2011 I actually know what Garmin is releasing. But I promised the person that told me that I would never, ever tell. I can tell you that it is a pretty major evolution on an existing platform. To the topic originator - if I were getting ready to install a 430W I would wait knowing what I know about it. Quote

fantom Posted February 23, 2011 Report Posted February 23, 2011 Hopefully older Garmins can be upgraded at reasonable cost. Quote
M20JFlyer Posted February 23, 2011 Report Posted February 23, 2011 For those wishing to learn more about Garmin launch of a new product....set your timer on thirty (30) days. If the the 23rd of March has a major event in aviation BE THERE. If not consider it a week of launch prep for SUN N FUN in FL. Hello: Keeping on topic I am the guy who needs help with and engine oil leak drivin me and my I.A. crazy. Please check the topic and ask your Lycoming friendly friends for IDEAS. Thanks Pat N9135W Quote
Ned Gravel Posted February 23, 2011 Report Posted February 23, 2011 Pat: I had the same issue which, when we discovered the source, resulted in a major overhaul at 1941 hours. Here is what we did to determine the source: Let the engine cool. Use a spray bottle with avgas in it to disolve any oil on the exterior surfaces. Keep a pan under the nose gear to collect all the drippings. When the entire block is clean, take it outside and run it for two minutes or so - just enough to get the oil well circulated. Then bring it back into the hanger and start shining lights into all the cracks. And/or feel for oily residue. If you see any, use a cloth to wipe it so as not to burn your fingers. If that doesn't work, then it may be time to apply some penetrant and see what it says. Good luck. Quote
