Northern Mooniac Posted April 2, 2017 Report Posted April 2, 2017 I have two sets of cards for my 430, figured out how to buy the updates from garmin, but not 100% sure what I need to update the nav and terrain cards? I think I need this? https://buy.garmin.com/en-CA/CA/p/pn/010-11308-00 Quote
gsengle Posted April 2, 2017 Report Posted April 2, 2017 I buy mine from Jeppesen, not Garmin, and never bother with Terrain. Just know you have 2 options for navdata so you can compare your options...Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote
Northern Mooniac Posted April 2, 2017 Author Report Posted April 2, 2017 Can you explain that? I can buy direct from garmin $149 for north america nav or nav terrain obs for 449. Whats the difference to go to jeppson I didn't know this was an option. And how do I program the card? Quote
Northern Mooniac Posted April 2, 2017 Author Report Posted April 2, 2017 If I went the jeppson way, could I also update my GNS300XL map data?? Quote
gsengle Posted April 2, 2017 Report Posted April 2, 2017 Go on jeppesens website. In either case you need a card reader for your computer...Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote
Godfather Posted April 2, 2017 Report Posted April 2, 2017 Jeppesen has updates for most of the gps units out there. You just need a sky bound adapter and a one time or annual subscription. I personally would only update the 430 but I'd get the 28 day updates vs the one time update. Quote
Northern Mooniac Posted April 2, 2017 Author Report Posted April 2, 2017 I guess this is where I need some advice. I have a gns430w, gnx300xl and getting a nav radio installed along with a secondary cdi. Basically the 300xl is a really fancy comm radio at this point. I'm getting an aspen 1000 pro installed, wonder if it's worth updating to work with the aspen? Quote
Northern Mooniac Posted April 2, 2017 Author Report Posted April 2, 2017 Jeppson is more expensive than garmin. $550 for Nav data with jeppson and 149 with garmin or 499 for nav/ter/obs with garmin. So why go with jeppson? Quote
Godfather Posted April 2, 2017 Report Posted April 2, 2017 (edited) 149 is a one time update. I'll look and see...what areas of NA do you need? Looks like for Canada you really need a North America coverage but with the 430w they only separate the regions of the lower 48. It forces you to get the entire Americas which is why it might be more expensive. Edited April 2, 2017 by Godfather Quote
gsengle Posted April 2, 2017 Report Posted April 2, 2017 You need an annual subscription if you're planning to fly IFR. The region the data covers also variesSent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote
Northern Mooniac Posted April 2, 2017 Author Report Posted April 2, 2017 I'm in canada and will be travelling to the US, so I need north america. They will give a pretty large discount to update my 300xl too only 125 for a subscripton, not sure if its worth it yet. Have to see about updating the aspen with them too. Quote
Godfather Posted April 2, 2017 Report Posted April 2, 2017 Yep, units like the 300xl would let you do the upper part of NA at a slight savings. Most of the newer units require all of the Americas. 'Personally I'd make sure the 430 was on the 28 day update cycle if flying IFR. I would not spend the money for the 300 or the Aspen. If you had 2 430's I would just for cross feed capability. Quote
Northern Mooniac Posted April 2, 2017 Author Report Posted April 2, 2017 My terrain/osb is 10 years old. might be worth doing that this year and go back to regular nav data with garmin for only 149/year compared to 550/year with jeppson. So I don't see the point in jeppson. I'm going to see about a one time purchase with jeppson for my 300xl and see if that is worthwhile. I have no idea how old the data is in there right now. Quote
Godfather Posted April 2, 2017 Report Posted April 2, 2017 (edited) For you I agree, for others in the US the Jepesen can cover the eastern half of the country for $400 which includes 12 updates (15 if you buy at osh which averages out to $1 per day). Edited April 2, 2017 by Godfather 1 Quote
rbridges Posted April 2, 2017 Report Posted April 2, 2017 I got my sky bound adapter at spruce for $69 plus tax and shipping. That was the cheapest I could find a new one. Quote
Vlakvark Posted April 3, 2017 Report Posted April 3, 2017 With Jeppesen you can pick different packages for your needs. You can phone the guys and ask them to assist you in what you want to do with the charts. I got mine for a really good deal for two units. Both Northen America and Terain as well as safe taxi. Safe taxi is a waist since we use ipads. If you need to borrow a skybound. Give me a hauler.. Quote
