Philip Posted March 7, 2017 Report Posted March 7, 2017 This is a good article explaining something that I was unclear on. If you fly for Angel Flight or the like and use a special call sign - you must update your ADBS-Out call sign or you cannot use the special callsign. https://spark.adobe.com/page/LSrPfAVXD2YH0/ Quote
peevee Posted March 7, 2017 Report Posted March 7, 2017 Hrm, now I have to see if my AXP340 has this feature. edit. Oh, I can change callsign easily. Problem solved. Quote
Bob - S50 Posted March 7, 2017 Report Posted March 7, 2017 Same with the Garmin GTX345. Easy to do but your installer has to set it up to make the ID editable. Quote
jlunseth Posted March 9, 2017 Report Posted March 9, 2017 I have the KT74 and fly for Angel Flight. It does have that ability and I have used it several times. Quote
Hank Posted March 9, 2017 Report Posted March 9, 2017 Wow! I didn't think transponders were designed to ch ange their output "on the fly." Who needs the whole FAA no-tracking procedure when you can just change the squawk in the box . . . Quote

I sent that article to our wing president or whatever he's called, thinking it's something he might want to distribute. Not a peep back. Nice. I was unfamiliar with it until I saw this thread. They encourage us to use the NGF telephony, you would think some additional attention to this issue would be warranted. Quote
jlunseth Posted March 9, 2017 Report Posted March 9, 2017 I don't remember getting any articles on how to do it, but I do remember getting an advisory from Angel Flight Central that it needed to be done. I suppose it is different for each xponder. The bigger issue is remembering to switch back when the passengers are out of the plane, so you are not flying around for the next two months with your xponder identifying you as an Angel Flight. carusoam Posted March 12, 2017 Report Posted March 12, 2017 The checklist for electronic bits is getting longer... both preflight and post flight... Best regards, -a- Quote
cliffy Posted March 12, 2017 Report Posted March 12, 2017 Does anyone remember no TCA inverted wedding cakes, no transponders, 20 channel crystal controlled transmitters, whistle stop tuning, and just looking out the window for other airplanes? :-) :-) 1 Quote

DAVIDWH Posted March 12, 2017 Report Posted March 12, 2017 For the historically inclined: Originally only military pilots had transponders and combat pilots never liked to use all those big technical words, like transponder, so they just called them parrots. You guessed it, now you know the etiology of the term SQUAWK. Quote
FoxMike Posted March 13, 2017 Report Posted March 13, 2017 When I learned to fly the only restricted airspace were military climb corridors located at the end of Air Force base runways. Good old days. However you had to know light signals because radios were quite unreliable. Quote
cliffy Posted March 13, 2017 Report Posted March 13, 2017 Like Castle AFB in Calif with all the BUFFs on long finals At least you could see them with the black smoke trail they laid out! Used to cross LAX at 1,000 feet all the time N-S. Back to our regularly scheduled program Quote
