My ‘77 J did not have one when I got it. Upon further review, The original paperwork from the airplane shows... from the factory, no step! 
 

speed mod or not, it looks better without it IMO. Cleaner look. I don’t miss it 99% of time  but older people do struggle a bit and it’s sometimes a thing, but... what do they say, buy for 80% of your mission? The foldable step is nice in theory, but not practical since pilot has to get in first. Unless you just have them stand on the wing and squeeze around them.
