Help with panel issue.

I took my m20f in for new transponder and panel upgrade. And was told panel up grade was not possible without a lot of modification because of the panel mounted on rubber grommets. It was suggested to replace bad grommets that had allowed panel to drop about an inch (that I hadn't noticed) but if not replaced could drop further an cause problem. Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.

Dham,  Try and do some homework...

Find the rubber panel mounts holding your panel up.  They are hiding behind the acorn nuts on the front side of the panel.

use your fingers to push up on the instrument panel if it moves a lot, the rubber mounts have become loose or worn.

Another way to know the panel is drooping...  the panel has a tendency to turn off the landing light.  The clearance between the panel and the switch (in the up position) is too small.

Often, the landing light CB switch is worn out and wants to turn itself off.  Given a slight bump from the drooping panel is All it takes.

The good news is new rubber panel shock mounts are readily available in standard sizes complete with new acorn nuts.  They cost a few bucks at aircraft spruce.  The acorns are mostly decoration.  There are other nuts behind the plastic panel that are for tightness , I believe.

Once you complete this homework exercise, check in with your mechanic on acquiring the proper hardware and getting it swapped in and logged properly...  or find a different mechanic something about the advice you are explaining doesn't sound the best for you.  The mechanic sounds like he may be testing your knowledge of your ship.  You came to the right place to find out more about what you have...

From my PP M20C experience.  I am not a mechanic...

Best regards,

Something doesn't sound right. Those panel mounts, even if broken should not allow the panel to drop an inch. Ask them for pictures of the problem and post them here.

I suspect they are either talking about something else or they are up to something.

It is possible if those mounts are old for panel to sag. An inch does sound extreme but conceivable.

They can be easily replaced without taking the whole panel apart. I replaced all of mine a couple years ago. They were sagging slightly about an eighth of an inch or so. It took me a couple of hours to do and I can give you some tips. PM me if interested.

Wow, yes I have had the landinging light switch off at times. I thought it was weird what little space the switches had. I love my plane but I have learned/learning a lot the hard way. Mooney space is an awesome resource. Thanks to all who take the time to help new mooney guys!

My panel has been changed out twice, the first time with a STCd panel by SWTA, the last time by the avionics shop who installed my present avionics. The replacement panels eliminated the rubber mounts. I'm told modern avionics and instruments can withstand and in some cases benefit from mild vibration.
