M20S Driver Posted September 18, 2016 Report Posted September 18, 2016 Looks like a few STC's are available for io550 tuned exhaust on Bonanzas. I did not find anything for io550 on Mooneys. Does anyone know why? My guesses are that the cowling is tight and there are not as many Mooneys as Bonanzas but it looks pretty straight forward. bonanza_header io550.pdf HighPerformanceExhaust.pdf Quote
Steve Dawson Posted September 19, 2016 Report Posted September 19, 2016 My guess is that because there's more Beechcraft than Mooneys with the IO 550 the designers return on their capital would be very small. Design, fabrication, testing, STC approvals. yada yada Quote
carusoam Posted September 19, 2016 Report Posted September 19, 2016 1) Since Speed & Efficiency are key attributes of Mooney... 2) Tuned exhausts have added a few percent HP on other Mooneys... 3) The IO550 in the R, S, and TN have a nicely tuned intake... 4) The IO550 in the R and S have a curvy exhaust that looks pretty well thought out... 5) The TN has a modern pair of TNs and ICs... 6) The R and S exhaust designs are 20+ years old... 7) Much of this part of the fleet is just starting to come up on their first round of OHs... 8) It would be interesting to see how much efficiency is left to be gained, and how much it would cost... 9) When does extra HP become not real world usable? In the NA world, We are drag limited as we cruise. More hp = more FF... 10) Less back pressure could equate to lower CHTs. The current CHTs for the IO550 are pretty good already... 11) D'Shannon has been around for a long period of time adding performance to brand B products. If there is some free useable hp, I'm all ears! Just some PP ideas that come to mind. Best regards, -a- Quote
Guest Posted September 20, 2016 Report Posted September 20, 2016 The second example looks the same as the exhaust on a N/A Cirrus SR22. Clarence Quote
